MIDDLETOWN — November 1, 2013 — The Eldred boys soccer completed a Yellowjackets’ sweep of the Section IX soccer championships Tuesday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Family School.
It was the first sectional championship in the history of the boys’ program. Just a few hours earlier, the Eldred girls team edged Livingston Manor to capture their first sectional title since 1986.
It’s been quite a turnaround for the boys’ team – a year ago they won just one game with only 12 players on the team. This year a record 28 kids tried out and that parlayed into a solid 9-6-2 season and the sectional title.
“They’ve grown as a team. They’ve come together, they work together, they communicate and now they know how to work as a team,” said Eldred head coach, Sonia Kidney.
Eldred will now play Long Island’s Smithtown Christian from Section XI in a pre-regional game Tuesday, November 5 at Middletown’s Faller Field. Game time is 6 p.m.
