Push came to shove for Cassandra Egan, who participated in the annual 5K River Run, with her two young daughters.

River Run rises in Callicoon

Story by Ken Cohen
CALLICOON — July 23, 2013 — The annual 5k River Run had their largest turnout ever this year to support the Delaware Youth Center with 283 participants running and walking down the stretch of River Road on Sunday.
“This is our largest fundraiser for the Delaware Youth Center and we really appreciate the sponsors, supporters and runners that came out for the 5k,” said Race Director and DYC board member Ann Santoro. “We are very thankful for the volunteers and Job Corps students, we have a team of people that put in hours and hours of work to make everything possible. I think it was one of the best races.”
With 310 registered entrants, raffles and sponsorships, the event came close to reaching its goal of raising $10,000, a number that is expected to increase as the numbers are finalized. The race was also sponsored by multiple local businesses including major sponsors Dr. Maureen Whipple, The Heron, Delaware Valley Farm and Garden and one of the most recent additions to Callicoon, Ridgeback Sports.
Many individual runners achieved personal goals as well as the flat course that runs parallel to the Delaware River yields plenty of fast times and personal bests.
Tri-Valley graduate and SUNY Oneonta sophomore Jimmy Bernstein finished first in a brisk time of 16:47, almost a minute ahead of Jason Kennedy of Honesdale. Bernstein, hardly looked winded and seemingly could have run faster if pushed.
Monticello sophomore Camryn Johnson was the first female finisher with a time of 21:54, good for 13th overall.
The first-place walker was Denise Porter of Youngsville.
