Downsville-Roscoe center Ashley Bivens battles for two of her eight points in the Lady Eagles’ 32-23 Section 4 conference win over Andes last Thursday evening.

Raising their games

Story by Jon Dinan
ROSCOE — February 12, 2013 – The Roscoe/Downsville girls and Chapel Field boys teams were victors Thursday night but the big winner was the American Cancer Society as approximately $910 was raised at the annual Coaches versus Cancer fundraiser held at Roscoe.
Players, coaches and fans from the Chapel Field, Andes, Downsville and Roscoe school districts worked together to help raise the money during the triple-header which also included a junior varsity game.
In addition to the admission proceeds, fans had the opportunity to make separate donations to the Cancer Society.
“I’m very happy with the turnout this year,” said Becky Ahart who has helped her husband Fred organize the Coaches vs. Cancer event since 1987. Fred has been involved since 1969.
In the boys’ game played first, Chapel Field topped Roscoe 83-69 in a non-conference match-up. The Blue Devils could not keep up with Chapel Field’s speed led by Chisolm Watson and Ricardo Aviles who finished with 21 and 20 points respectively.
Chapel Field had four players score in double figures. Roscoe’s numbers were less evenly dispersed as only Rob Taurino who finished with a game-high 35 points and Marc Rosario with 13 cracked double figures.
After the boys cleared out, the Roscoe/Downsville girls took the floor sporting pink t-shirts in place of their warm-ups.
They came out energized in their pre-game routine and that exuberance seemed to carry over into their conference match-up.
The Lady Eagles kept the lead throughout the entire game, eventually broadening a five-point halftime lead to 10 in the middle of the third quarter.
Led by team top-scorer, Kaileen Townsend who finished with nine points and Sam Bingay with eight points, the Lady Eagles cruised to a 32-23 league victory over Andes, which had just three players score in the contest.
