Taking names at the games

Story by Fred Stabbert III
MONTICELLO — April 30, 2013 — Six Sullivan County track teams put themselves to the test Saturday during the 25th Annual Monticello Games at Monticello High School.
Eldred, Liberty, Livingston Manor, Monticello, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley competed against six other teams from Orange, Putnam and Ulster counties in the 12-team track meet under near perfect weather conditions.
Monticello’s top track athlete, Shane Jackson, had to rest a weary hamstring but his teammates showed why they are undefeated this year by coming away with another convincing victory.
Despite not have his “Top Panther,” Monticello Track Coach Matt Buddenhagen felt confident his stable of top runners could compete with the field.
“We have a lot of Clydesdales,” Buddenhagen said. “We are going to try and give Jackson a rest today.”
Those workhorses included Terry Duncan, who blazed to wins in the 200 (23.2), 400 (51.2) and was part of the winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams. He was named the meet’s Outstanding Track Athlete.’
Ellenville’s Jeff Nunez claimed Outstanding Field Athlete with wins in the hammer and discus.
Girls’ Meet
On the girls’ side of the ledger, an experienced and deep Tri-Valley Bears team ran away with the win, scoring an impressive 146 points to well outdistance second place Monticello, which scored 99.
Tri-Valley’s Autumn Bender won the Outstanding Track Performer with wins in the 800 and 1,500 while teammate Mareena DiMilia won the Outstanding Field performer with wins in the shot put and javelin and a second in the hammer. DeMilia also won the 100 hurdles.
