The 11th Annual Smallwood/Mongaup Valley Fire Department Fighting Fires 5K run/walk around scenic Smallwood Lake was held on Sunday. More than 150 runners and walkers start their close to 3.1 mile trek around Smallwood lake. Sunday’s 5K was in memory of the late Margaret Hazen, former owner of Gaetano’s Restaurant in Monticello, and Richard Crumley. Crumley, a Town of Bethel board member, passed away last month from lung disease.

Capizzi Sizzles in
Fighting Fires 5K

SMALLWOOD — Andrew Capizzi of Paramus, NJ, easily won the the run division of the The Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department’s 11th Annual Fighting Fires 5K race/walk around scenic Smallwood Lake Sunday.
Capizzi’s time of 16:32 was a full minute ahead of second place finisher Jason Kennedy of Honesdale, PA.
Despite the heat, more than 150 participants of all ages took part in the race which was held in memory of the late Margaret Hazen, former owner of Gaetano's restaurant in Monticello, and Richard Crumley, a longtime Town of Bethel board member who passed away just last month from lung disease.
All proceeds from the race went to benefit the Samallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department.
