Headed to sectionals

By Rob Potter
SULLIVAN COUNTY — Ten local teams have already qualified for sectional play in boys’ and girls’ basketball and two other teams still have a chance to qualify.
According to the Section IX criteria for team sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer and softball, there are several ways a team can qualify for postseason play:
A. Having a .500 or better division record.
B. Having a .500 or better record in your Class (AA, A, B, C or D).
C. Having a .500 or better Class division record.
There are two leagues in Section IX for basketball, the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) and Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA). While all of the teams in each OCIAA division are the same class, the teams in the MHAL divisions are from different classes.
In one MHAL division, for example, there are three Class C teams and one Class D team. If a Class C team has a .500 or better record against the fellow Class C teams in its division, that Class C team would qualify for sectionals.
D. Having plus points in your division. A team receives points for each game it plays. A team earns more points for beating a larger school than it does for defeating a school that is the same class or smaller. A team loses less points when it is defeated by a larger school than it does when it is defeated by a school in the same class or a smaller school.
E. Having overall plus points on the season.
F. Having a .500 or better overall record.
G. Being a committee selection. A committee of league and section officials can approve a team’s request to play in sectionals.
Here is a look at how each local boys’ and girls’ basketball team stands in terms of qualifying for sectionals.

Boys
Eldred (6-10, 1-8 OCIAA Div. V): The Yellowjackets have been eliminated from sectionals.
Fallsburg (11-5, 6-2 Div. V): With a better than .500 record for both overall games and division games, the Comets have assured themselves a spot in the Class C tournament.
The Family School (3-10, 1-4 Div. VI): The Falcons have been eliminated from sectionals.
Liberty (5-11, 2-3 Div. IV): The Indians are scheduled to end the regular season with a non-league game and a Div. IV game. They played at Livingston Manor last night in a non-league game and will visit John S. Burke Catholic on Tuesday night. By winning one of its final two games and counting the four wins it had to forfeit earlier this season, Liberty would end the regular season with a 10-8 overall record. If the Indians win at least one of those games, school officials were planning to appeal to Section IX to be a committee selection in the Class B tournament.
Livingston Manor (11-4, 6-0 Div. VI): The Wildcats, who won the Div. VI title with a perfect 6-0 record, have earned a spot in the Class D tournament.
Monticello (7-10, 3-2 Div. III): The Panthers clinched a spot in the Class A tournament with their 49-46 Div. III victory over Goshen on Wednesday night. Even if host Cornwall defeats Monticello on Tuesday night in a Div. III game, the Panthers would have a .500 record of 3-3 in the division.
Roscoe (3-13, 3-2 Div. VI): The Blue Devils clinched a berth in the Class D tournament by defeating The Family School, 59-55, in overtime on Monday night and securing a .500 Division record.
Sullivan West (11-6, 2-3 Div. IV): The Bulldogs will be playing in the Class B tournament based on their better than .500 overall record of 11-6.
Tri-Valley (11-6, 5-4 Div. V): Based on their 11-6 overall record, the Bears have qualified for the Class C tournament.
Girls
Eldred (5-12, 2-8 Div. V): The Lady Yellowjackets have been eliminated from the sectionals.
The Family School (0-17, 0-4 Div. VI): The Lady Falcons have been eliminated from the sectionals.
Fallsburg (10-6, 3-5 Div. V): With its 10-6 overall record, Fallsburg have earned a berth in the Class C tournament.
Liberty (7-9, 3-2 Div. IV): The Lady Indians’ 43-41 Div. IV win over James I. O’Neill on Monday night guaranteed they will finish with at least a .500 record in the division and therefore will play in the Class B tournament.
Livingston Manor (10-8, 4-0 Div. VI): The Lady Wildcats, who won the Div. VI title with an umblemished record of 4-0, have qualified for the Class D tournament.
Monticello (8-8, 2-2 Div. III): The Lady Panthers need to win one of their two remaining games, both of which are Div. III contests, to qualify for sectionals. Monticello was scheduled to play at Goshen last night and will visit Cornwall on Wednesday night.
Roscoe (2-13, 2-2 Div. VI): With a .500 mark of 2-2 in Div. VI, the Lady Blue Devils have earned a spot in the Class D tournament.
Sullivan West (3-12, 0-4 Div. IV): The Lady Bulldogs have been eliminated from the sectionals.
Tri-Valley (15-1, 8-1 Div. V): With overall and division records that are both well above .500, the Lady Bears have secured a berth in the Class C tournament.
