Local teams compete in OCIAA cross country meet in Monticello

MONTICELLO — Runners from five Sullivan County high schools competed in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) cross country meet on Tuesday afternoon at Monticello High School.
The boys’ race included runners from Liberty, Livingston Manor, Monticello, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley. The girls’ race featured runners from Liberty, Monticello, SW and T-V.
In the boys’ race, T-V defeated Livingston Manor 16-39, defeated Liberty 18-37, defeated Monticello 15-50 and defeated SW 18-37. Liberty defeated Livingston Manor 19-36 and defeated SW 26-29. SW defeated Livingston Manor 23-32 and defeated Monticello 15-50. Livingston Manor defeated Monticello 15-50.
T-V’s season record is now 4-0 overall, 1-0 OCIAA Div. V. SW is 2-2, 0-1 OCIAA Div. IV. Liberty is 3-1, 1-0 OCIAA Div. IV. Livingston Manor is 1-3, 0-1 OCIAA Div. V. Monticello is 0-4.
T-V’s Jimmy Bernstein won the race in a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds.
It was the first time Bernstein ever ran the course.
“It’s definitely a great course,” said Bernstein, who is a senior. “It has uphills and downhills. There are some nice rolling downhills that help you go faster.”
Bernstein noted that he and teammate Omar Lopez, who finished second in 16:16, ran together for virtually the entire race.
“We were right next to each other the whole time,” Bernstein said. “We were pushing each other to go faster.”
Bernstein noted that he “went for it” at the end of the race to finish three seconds ahead of Lopez.
“This is our third race of the season,” Bernstein commented. “We are getting better each time we run.”
The times of the other boys in the race were as follows.

In the girls’ race, T-V defeated Liberty 15-50, defeated Monticello 23-32 and defeated SW 25-30. Monticello defeated Liberty 15-50 and defeated SW 27-28. SW defeated Liberty 15-50.
T-V improved its season record to 3-0. Liberty is 0-3 overall, 0-1 OCIAA Div. IV. Monticello is 2-1. SW is 1-2, 1-0 OCIAA Div. IV.
T-V’s Autumn Bender won the girls’ race in a time of 19:16. Camryn Johnson of Monticello was second in 19:32.
“This is the first time I’ve run on this course,” said Bender, an eighth-grader in her second season on the Lady Bears’ team. “I like the downhills. They are steep, but they are nice because you can start running faster when you go down them.”
Bender noted that she was part of a group of runners which stayed near the front during the entire race. The other runners in the group included Johnson, and SW teammates Kelsey Dutton and Dani Myers.
Bender said she “just kept going” to break away from the group and finish 16 seconds ahead of Johnson.
“This is our third race and the season is good overall,” Bender commented.
The other finishers behind Bender and Johnson were as follows.
