Eldred corners Port in non-league soccer

By Anya Tikka
PORT JERVIS — On a soggy field, the visiting Eldred Yellowjackets limited mistakes, controlled the ball and splashed their way to a 2-1 victory over Port Jervis in a non-league soccer game played September 29.
With the victory, Eldred improved its season record to 3-4 while Port Jervis fell to 2-5.
Both teams scored a goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest as defenders struggled with their footing on the wet field. Brian Hazen scored for Eldred and Allastar Smith, with an assist by Mackenzie Decker answered for Port Jervis.
Eldred then kept play in the Port Jervis zone for most of the second half and Francesco “Coco” Merendino capitalized with the winning goal after a corner kick and an assist from Craig Burns.
Merendino had several other good shots at the goal, benefitting from his deft dribbling and precise passing from teammates Hazen, Merendino, Burns and Peter Vorstadt.
“As of right now, we are 3-4 with 10 games left on the schedule,” Eldred Coach Gerard Gass said. “We are still looking at making the sectionals and see it as a distinct possibility.”
Eldred goalie Travis Steimle and Port Jervis goalie Matt Babcock each made eight saves in the game.
