OCIAA Cross Country: Seven from Sullivan Scoot into Sectionals

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Eldred’s Alex Campanella and Hunter Proscia and Tri-Valley’s Jim Bernstein and Autumn Bender all finished in the top 10 at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Cross Country Championship Meet to lead seven local runners into the Section IX Championship today at Bear Mountain State Park.
Also finishing in the top 25 individual at the OCIAA Championship held last Friday at Bear Mountain to qualified for the Section IX Championship were Tri-Valley’s Omar Lopez on the boys’ side and Monticello’s Camryn Johnson and Eldred’s Christine Donnelly for the girls.
Warwick’s Patrizio Grandinali won the boys’ race in a time of 15 minutes, 26.93 seconds. Teammates Grant Parelli and Aaron Peterson finished second and third, respectively. Parrelli’s time was 15:34.02, while Peterson crossed the finish line in 15:59.68.
Then came the Sullivan County contingent of Campanella, Bernstein and Proscia who finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively out of the 134 runners who started. Lopes placed 14th.
With its sweep of the top three spots in the boys’ raceWarwick won the team title with 33 points and a Total Time of 1:20:05.33. Washingtonville placed second (109 points, Total Time: 1:24:16.89) and Monroe-Woodbury was third (124 points, Total Time: 1:24:36.04). Tri-Valley finished a very respectable ninth among the 19 teams that competed.
Other county teams finished as follows: 12. Eldred (316 points, Total Time: 1:37:16.28); 16. SW (426 points, Total Time: 1:37:02.96); 17. Liberty (465 points, Total Time: 1:36:59.32); 18. Livingston Manor (543 points, Total Time: 1:44:51.31).
In the girls’ race, Newburgh’s Gianna Frontera led the 128 runners in a time of 17:36.93. She was followed by Holly Cavalluzzo of Valley Central, who took second in 18:05.03, and Lauren Hehir of Washingtonville, who placed third in 18:14.11.
Tri-Valley’s Bender finished eighth (18:53.52) followed by Johnson, 14th (19:05.31) and Donnelly, 20th (19:21.81).
Cornwall topped the 17 girls’ teams by earning 68 points and recording a Total Time of 1:35:28.18. Monroe-Woodbury finished second (81 points, Total Time: 1:35:56.43) and Warwick was third (100 points, Total Time: 1:37:11.94).
T-V placed highest among county teams. The Lady Bears were fifth with 173 points and a Total Time of 1:41:08.33.
SW finished seventh (223 points, Total Time: 1:43:12.59), Monticello was ninth (249 points, Total Time: 1:44:10.29) and Eldred finished 15th (368 points, Total Time: 1:53:34.69).
