White Sulphur Springs FD defeats
Smallwood-Mongaup Valley FD, 14-1

By Rob Potter
MONGAUP VALLEY — The White Sulphur Springs Fire Department took an early 5-0 lead and didn’t look back on its way to a 14-1 victory over the Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department in Thursday evening’s Eastern Sullivan Firefighters Softball League game at Edward M. Collins Memorial Park in Mongaup Valley.
In the top of the first inning, Mike Black, Joe Decker, Tim Pellam and Devin Day each had an RBI single to help WSSFD take a 5-0 lead.
WSSFD, which improved its record to 2-1 on the young season, added two runs in the top of the third inning. Devin Day, who reached base with a one-out single, scored when Ryan Barber drew a walk with the bases loaded. Pellam then crossed home plate when Carl Yaun hit a sacrifice fly.
Decker scored on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth and Josh Schwartz had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to give WSSFD a 9-0 advantage.
SMVFD, which also has a record of 2-1 so far this season, registered its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Frank Donohue led off the frame with an infield hit and scored moments later when Joe Bonnaci grounded out.
In the top of the seventh, Schwartz belted a three-run home run and Black hit a two-run homer to close out the scoring.
Note: The Eastern Sullivan Firefighters Softball League games will continue on week-nights at several Sullivan County fields from now through the month of August..
