LOCH SHELDRAKE — July 3, 2007 — Sullivan Spartans’ pitcher Jeremiah Ferris throws as strike as teammate B.J. Masopost looks on during Game 1 of the Spartans’ Saturday afternoon Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader against the Dutchess Dutchmen at Sullivan County Community College. Ferris allowed just two hits and walked only one batter to record the complete game victory.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Byron Haynes scored on a sacrifice fly by Marc Morterallo and Mickey Collins crossed home plate when Matt Berger drew a bases-loaded walk.
Steve Genao scored the only Dutchess run of the contest in the top of the third. He began the frame with a bunt single down the third base line.
Genao scored on an error a few minutes later to cut the Spartans’ advantage to one run.
However, the Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lenin Sepluveda walked to start the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
Haynes then singled to left field, which brought B.J. Masopost in to score to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead.
Sullivan (7-14-1) added three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Derek Blume had an RBI single and Pete Eichner blasted a two-run double to the base of the fence in left center field.
Dutchess wins Game 2
In the afternoon’s second game, four Spartan pitchers allowed 13 hits as Dutchess prevailed, 10-8, in extra innings.
Haynes was the second Spartan in the last week to lead off the bottom of the first inning with a home run.
Haynes also stole two bases and scored three runs.
Devin Conroy and Sepluveda were both 2-for-4 in the loss.
Both Conroy and Sepluveda scored a run, while Conroy contributed an RBI as well.
Note: The Spartans are scheduled to host the Brooklyn Bonnies at 5 p.m. today at the SCCC baseball field.
Then on Thursday, the Dutchess Dutchmen are slated to return to Loch Sheldrake to face the Spartans again. First pitch of that game is set for 6 p.m.
