Spartans sweep doubleheader

By Lori Brown
LOCH SHELDRAKE — The Sullivan Spartans hosted the Ulster County Angels in a Hudson Valley Collegiate Baseball League (HVCBL) doubleheader on Sunday at the Sullivan County Community College baseball field.
Sullivan swept the twinbill by respective scores of 10-1 and 11-3, improving its record to 4-2-1 on the season.
After holding Ulster (1-3) scoreless in the top of the first inning of the opening game, Sullivan scored four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Fernando Peralta led off with a triple and the next batter, George Ban, was hit by a pitch. On a passed ball, Peralta scored and Ban advanced to second base. Devin Conroy was also hit by a pitch and Vinnie Malzahn walked to load the bases with one out.
Mickey Collins slammed a single to bring home Ban and Conroy. Malzahn scored the Spartans’ fourth run when Brian Aponte drew a walk.
In the top of the second, Spartans’ pitcher Mark Fochesato recorded two strikeouts while holding the Angels scoreless.
The Spartans extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second as Ban scored on a triple by Conroy. Fochesato struck out two more Angels in the top of the third. Sullivan added to its lead in the fourth. Matt Berger slammed a double to left center field to start the frame and scored when Peralta doubled to right center field.
After an out was recorded, Conroy doubled to bring home Peralta. Marc Mortellaro brought home Conroy with a double to give Sullivan an 8-0 advantage.
The Angels called a timeout to switch pitchers as Jimmy Amend took over for starter Justin Murphy. Amend got the next two batters to ground out to end the inning.
Ulster finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as D.J. Welch crossed the plate on an error. After Fochesato struck out the next two Angels, Chris Cahill hit a single. Justin Fredenburg attempted to score on the hit, but was tagged out at home plate.
The Spartans started off strong in the bottom of the fifth when Brian Aponte doubled and then Lenin Sepluveda singled. Later, Ban hit a two-out single to bring home Aponte. Sepluveda scored the Spartans’ final run when Devin Conroy singled.
Fochesato recorded eight strikeouts and allowed only Cahill’s hit in picking up the victory. The Spartans pounded out 10 hits in the contest. Leading the way were Peralta (2-for-4, double, triple, two runs scored), Conroy (3-for-3, triple, three RBIs) and Aponte (2-for-3, double, one RBI).
The Spartans are scheduled to return to the SCCC field this Sunday, June 8 for a doubleheader against the Rome Thunderbolts. First pitch of the opening game is slated for 1 p.m.
