Locals compete at OCIAA track and field championships

WARWICK — Dozens of athletes from Sullivan County high schools participated in last week’s Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) track and field championship meet.
The two-day event began last Friday afternoon and concluded on Saturday at Warwick High School.
In the boys’ team standings, Tri-Valley posted the best finish by a Sullivan County school. The Bears earned 37 points to finish sixth overall.
Liberty placed ninth (23 points), while Sullivan West and Monticello each scored 6 points to tie Minisink Valley for 15th place.
T-V senior Garrett Grey won two events, discus and javelin.
Grey threw the discus 148 feet, 1 inch and his winning javelin throw was 162 feet, 2 inches. The javelin was a non-scoring event, however.
Grey’s teammates Tanzeel Kahn and Bob Fielder placed second and sixth, respectively, in the discus. Kahn threw the discus a distance of exactly 142 feet and Fiedler’s throw was 126 feet.
Kahn also placed third in the javelin (151-2) and fourth in the shot put (48-10 3/4).
Liberty’s Malcolm Strother placed among the top six in three individual events. He was second in the 100-meter dash (11.12 seconds), third in the 200 (22.98 seconds) and fourth in the high jump (6 feet).
Saeed Robinson of Liberty finished third in the 400 (51.04 seconds).
Monticello senior Brendan Devine was third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:44.58.
SW junior Colin Seidl placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:12.56.
In the girls’ team competition, Monticello finished eighth with 22 points and T-V placed ninth (20 points).
In addition, Liberty was 15th (4), Eldred finished 16th (2) and SW was 17th (1).
T-V’s Tehnyet Kahn won the girls’ discus event with a throw of 107 feet, 2 inches. She also placed fifth in the shot put (31-10 1/2).
Monticello junior Jessica Fingers finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:03.27 and third in the 1,500 (4:44.56).
Eldred’s Christina Watts placed fifth in the 100-meter dash in 12.81 seconds.
In the 2,000-meter steeplechase, T-V senior Courtney Roosa placed second (7:20.38) and Monticello junior Emma Cohen was fifth (7:45.88).
Monticello senior Pollyanna Palhano finished third in the pentathlon with 2,288 points.
Liberty senior Kim McKay finished fifth in the pentathlon with 2,174 points. McKay won the shot put event of the pentathlon by putting the shot 7.91 meters.
SW’s Morgan Hawkins was sixth in the pole vault (8-6).
