White Sulphur Springs undefeated

By Laura Stabbert
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Last Wednesday evening the rain held off long enough for the White Sulphur Springs Fire Department team to beat the opposing Monticello Fire Department team, 7-2, and stay undefeated for another week in the Eastern Sullivan Firefighters Softball League.
The game started out with Ryan Calkin on the mound for WSSFD, and with three quick outs, it was WSSFD’s turn to bat.
WSSFD wasted no time in taking the lead.
Carl Yaun started out with a double and Matt DeWitt followed with a home run to put their team up by two in the first inning.
Both teams did not score in the second inning. The top of the third was also scoreless for MFD.
The bottom of the third was a strong inning for WSSFD.
DeWitt got on base with a single and advanced to third on a double by Josh Schwartz. Joe Decker was able to keep the momentum going with a single to load the bases against MFD pitcher Brian Gregory.
Mike Black was next at bat for WSSFD. Although he didn’t get on base, he recorded two RBIs when he sent the softball so deep into the outfield that DeWitt and Schwartz both were able to score after tagging up and bump the WSSFD lead to 4-0.
Chris Cavello hit a home run for MFD in the fourth inning to bring the score to 4-1, but MFD was unable to score any more runs in the frame.
Devin Day responded to the round tripper by Cavello with a home run for WSSFD in the bottom of the fourth.
MFD drew closer in the sixth inning, however.
With MFD catcher Jose Mora on base, A.J. Washington singled. Mora was able to score on the hit and make the score 5-2.
But WSSFD wasn’t done swinging its bats. In the bottom of the sixth, leadoff batter Black hit a home run. Chad Roth then followed suit by hitting a home run to give WSSFD a 7-2 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Calkin allowed a hit before setting down the next three MFD batters to secure his team’s win.
