Royal Associates defeats Holiday Mountain Bears

By Lori Brown
LIBERTY — July 23, 2010 — The Royal Associates team hit its way to a 16-2 victory over the Holiday Mountain Bears on Tuesday night in a Liberty Slo-Pitch Softball League “B” Division game at Liberty Elementary School.
Holiday Mountain (0-15) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Jerry Novobilski walked, Pete Dworetsky hit a home run over the left field fence.
Unfortunately for Dworetsky, Novobilski and their teammates, those two runs were the only runs Holiday Mountain scored in the game as Royal Associates played great defense.
Royal Associates (10-3) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first. Jimmy Snowden slammed a two-run double and Jason Rogers followed with an RBI double.
In the bottom of the second, Tom Merton belted a three-run home run to give Royal Associates a 6-2 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Bears hit three straight singles to load the bases. But those runners remained at their bases as Royal Associates played tight defense to keep it a 6-2 game.
Royal Associates pulled away in the bottom of the fourth by scoring five runs for an 11-2 advantage. Key hits in the frame included RBI singles by Mike Beach and Cliff Manning and Snowden’s two-run triple.
In the bottom of the fifth, Royal Associates recorded what turned out to be the last five runs of the game during a two-out rally. Beach had an RBI double, Manning slammed a two-run single and Merton hit a two-run homer to deep center field.
Holiday Mountain’s Anthony Dworetsky had a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but was stranded there as Royal Associates recorded three outs.
“We had good pitching, good hitting and good defense in tonight’s game,” Royal Associates Player/Coach Bobby Merton said.
Royal Associates is slated to play Loch Sheldrake Wine and Liquor at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Liberty Elementary School.
“That game should decide who takes first place in the ‘B’ division,” said Merton, noting that the two teams are currently tied for the top spot in the division.
Holiday Mountain Co-Coach Joe Wilcox said, “I’m glad everyone keeps showing up. We still have fun, which is the main thing.”
The Bears are scheduled to play their next game on Aug. 3.
