ROSCOE — January 26, 2010 — The Fallsburg Lady Comets rallied from an early deficit on Friday night to earn a 47-38 non-league victory over the host Roscoe Lady Blue Devils.
Fallsburg (4-7) trailed by as many as eight points in the first quarter but came back to cut the Lady Blue Devils’ advantage to a single point, 23-22, at halftime.
The Lady Comets took the lead for the first time when Jeweliana Trujillo made a shot in the lane with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Teammate Shaina Swerdling swished a 3-pointer at the 1:58 mark to extend the Lady Comets’ lead to 33-29.
However, Roscoe’s Taylor DeVantier made a jump shot on the baseline with three seconds to go to make it a 33-31 game going into the fourth period.
With 7:28 to go in the final quarter, Roscoe’s Amanda Ladenhauf scored to tie the contest at 33-33.
The Lady Comets regained the lead on their next possession as Keyshawn Kennedy made a jump shot.
Fallsburg then held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Swerdling led Fallsburg with nine points, all of which came on successful shots from beyond the 19-foot, 9-inch arc. Kayla Kearns had seven points and Jasmine James and Sheryl Pinder added six points apiece for the Lady Comets.
“Kayla [Kearns] played well, Shaina [Swerdling] shot the ball very well, Keyshawn [Kennedy] had a good game and Sheryl [Pinder] and Shanice [Mack] really cleaned up on the boards,” Fallsburg Coach Daniel Redmond said. “This was a great team effort.”
Redmond, who also noted that Myana DeCosta “played well on defense,” said that playing together is what the Lady Comets are focusing on for the rest of the season.
“We talked yesterday about teamwork and that’s the way we played tonight,” he said. “It was a great team performance and everybody contributed. We came out and defeated a very good Roscoe team.”
DeVantier, a senior guard, scored a team-high 12 points. Also contributing for Roscoe (3-8) were Kiera Browne, who had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, Ladenhauf (10 points) and Amanda Huggins (four points, eight rebounds).
“They came to play ball tonight,” Roscoe Coach Becky Ahart said of the Lady Comets.
