Holly W. Simmonds Peterson, 88
February 14, 1925 - May 13, 2013

Holly Winifred Simmonds Peterson of Hankins died at the Golden Living Nursing Home of Scranton, PA on Monday, May 13, 2013. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harold W. Simmonds and Evelyn Malone Simmonds, she was born February 14, 1925, in Brooklyn.
A creative and vivacious person, she was a 1946 alumna of Pratt Institute. She was an actress and costume designer with the DVAA, puppeteer and designer for Peterson Puppet Playhouse, co-author and co-illustrator with late husband John L. Peterson. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, and baker, and a founding member of a regional food co-operative. Mrs. Peterson was a fashion model in her youth, a nursery school teacher, Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, and member of St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon. She loved mysteries, marmalade, and chatting with friends, and had a photographic memory for color and a dry wit. She was a beautiful bright light in this world.
She is survived by Joel David Barnes Peterson of Hankins, her son, who was for many years also her devoted caretaker, companion, and closest friend. She is survived by son, John Christopher Peterson, and spouse Susan Peterson of Owego, son Matthew James Peterson and spouse Susan Titus of Ithaca, daughter Elizabeth Holly Peterson and spouse Jean Dolan of Georgia; a brother, Thomas Simmonds and spouse Ann Simmonds of North Carolina; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and several nieces and nephews. She leaves her loyal dog Henry. The family is grateful for the companionship and care of long-time friend and neighbor Eleanor Hoffmann whom she considered a sister.
In lieu of funeral services or memorial, she requested that family and friends celebrate life.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Home Health Care Professionals and Hospice of Eynon, PA or to a hospice of your choice.
