(Mary) Emily B. Evans of Presque Isle, Maine, a devoted educator and nutritionist, went to be with the Lord November 14, 2013 at the age of 95 at the Aroostook Health Center, Mars Hill, Maine.
Emily was born May 28, 1918, in Abrahamsville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Clifford T. and Naomi (Baker) Blair.
Emily's life was filled with love and devotion to her family and service to her church and her community - a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, neighbor and friend —she will be lovingly remembered.
Valuing education in many venues, Emily was a Cooperative Extension Agent with the University of Maine, an Extension Nutrition Specialist and a faculty member at the University of New Hampshire, a high school home economics teacher (Towanda, Richland, and Schaefferstown, PA), a nutrition instructor for the Penn State University School of Nursing (Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA) and a home economist for Penelec (Pennsylvania Electric Company). Her influence as an educator extended to daily radio programs and the development of many teaching materials. In 1980, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Emily was valedictorian of her class at Damascus (PA) High School, having just turned 16. She earned her B.S. (1938) and M.S. (1943) degrees from Penn State University where she met her beloved husband, Robert. She also completed a variety of post graduate studies at other universities and colleges. She was a member of the honor societies Kappa Omicron Nu, Pi Lambda Theta, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Epsilon Sigma Phi.
Throughout her life, Emily was active in many community and professional organizations. In 1983, she was named the Fort Kent, Maine Business and Professional Women's Club Woman-of-the-Year. Emily was an active member of her church wherever she lived. While living in Keene, NH, where she spent most of her retirement years, Emily was a member of The American Association of University Women, Cheshire County Retired Educators Association, Cheshire County Republican Women's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution; and was an avid bridge player. In 2007 she moved to Presque Isle, ME to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Emily was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Evans (1979), her brother and sister-in-law Keith and Helen Blair, and son-in-law, Kenneth Wicks.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law - Carol Ann and William Owen, Hancock, NH, Louise and Robert Roy, Presque Isle, ME, Pamela and Dr. Robert Snyder, Downingtown, PA; seven granddaughters - Aimee (Roy) and her husband Bruce Wilkins, Presque Isle, ME, Kate Roy, Kansas City, MO, Christine (Roy) and her husband Tony Alfonso, Roseville, MN, Rebecca Roy, Baltimore, MD, Emily(Snyder) and her husband Geoffrey Goodman, Washington, D.C., Julia Snyder, Philadelphia, PA, Catherine Snyder, Washington, D.C.; great-granddaughters Leah and Emily Wilkins, Gianna Alfonso; and great-grandsons, Adam and Josiah Goodman.
