Laura Rough, 82

Laura Elizabeth Anne Miller Rough was born in Long Island City, NY on February 23, 1927. Her parents were Martin Lawrence Miller and Laura Freeman Miller. On July 5, 1952 in Forestburgh, NY at St. Joseph’s Chapel, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, she married Henry Thomas Rough who survives in Poughquag, NY.
Mrs. Rough attended St. Joseph’s Mountain School, Sullivan County, NY where she was graduated from high school in 1944.  In 1948, she received a BA Degree in English and Latin from Good Counsel College, White Plains, NY.  In 1983, Mrs. Rough received the degree of Master of Religious Education from St. Joseph’s Institute, Yonkers, NY.
Mrs. Rough taught in Parochial Schools in Dutchess County.  For two decades, she taught religion to public school students through the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.  She served as a lector, commentator and choir member at St. Denis Church, Sylvan Lake.  She was a founding trustee of the Beekman Reading Center in 1965, and was honored to become a Trustee Emeritus of the Beekman Library, Poughquag, NY.
Mrs. Rough was a frequent participant in the Handicapped Encounter Retreat Movement.  She was active in Home Extension, 4-H, Girl Scouts, AAUW, Beekman Seniors, Beekman School PTA and the Beekman Democratic Committee.
Mrs. Rough is survived by six children, Thomas Rough of Poughquag, NY, his wife Sylviane and their son, Ian, and his daughter, Tara Schneider and her son, Benjamin Schneider; Kevin Rough of Groton, CT; Dorothy Rough of Aberdeen, WA; Elizabeth Hiller of Olivebridge, NY, her husband Saul and their daughter Sarah; Victor Rough of Irvine, CA, his wife Lina and their children Matt and Michelle; and Helen Rough of Poughkeepsie, NY; and two cousins, Thomas Moriarty of Enfield, CT and Elizabeth Muller of Spring Hill, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date.  Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.

Helen H. Simpson
Homemaker, 95

Helen H. Simpson of Roscoe, NY, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at the Roscoe Regional Rehabilitation and Residential Health Care Facility, Roscoe. She was 95.
The daughter of the late George and Anna Landeck Hillriegel, she was born December 16, 1913 in Fremont, NY.
Helen was a member of the United Church of Roscoe, a former member of the Roscoe-Rockland Grange, the Rebecca Lodge of Roscoe, and the Roscoe PTA.
Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Pippo and her husband John of Hortonville, NY; Shirley Fuller and her husband Willie of Tulsa, Okla.; Beatrice Bloom and her husband E. Vernon of Napa, Calif.; and Thelma Rieping and her husband Heinrich of Dumont, NJ; one son, Lester Hillriegel and his wife Margaret of Callicoon, NY; one sister, Anna Duncan of Fairport, NY; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Kennie E. Simpson, whom she married July 9, 1932 in Hamburg, NJ; one sister, Lillian Will; and four brothers, Harold, Arthur, Albert and George Hillriegel; and one grandson, Donald Gatrell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave., Roscoe, NY.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 3 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Cicio will officiate.
Burial will be made in the Bon Air Cemetery, Roscoe.
