Lee “Grumpy” V.V. Scanlan
Former Woodbourne resident, 72

Lee “Grumpy” V.V. Scanlan, 72, of Pitcher, NY, and formerly of Woodbourne, NY, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010, as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Milan, Ohio.
Mr. Scanlan was born in Stamford, CT on July 9, 1938, a son of John “Jack” and Priscilla VanVleet Scanlan. A longtime resident of the area, he was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard having served from 1957 to 1963. He retired as a corrections officer, at the rank of lieutenant, after working 26 years for the NYS Department of Corrections. He also served as a former Deputy for the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, and Town Constable and Justice of the Peace for the Town of Otselic. He was a member and past chief of the South Otselic Fire Department.
Mr. Scanlan had many jobs throughout his life including owner/operator of Lee Scanlan’s Towing, doing auto repair, driving milk truck, school bus, and fuel truck, and working for the Town of Otselic Highway Department.
In his spare time, he enjoyed motorcycle riding, camping, and taking trips with his grandchildren. A loving father, husband, and grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Evelyn Bertholf Scanlan, at home; daughters, Lee Jean (Michael) Stith of Pitcher and Dawn (Wayne Foster) Loomis of S. Otselic; his mother, Priscilla Scanlan of Norwich; grandchildren, Jacob, Casey, and Elyshia Stith, and Nellie, Ashlyn, and Ryan Loomis; and a great granddaughter, Leah Stith.
He is predeceased by his father, John “Jack” Scanlan.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no prior calling hours or funeral service. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of South Otselic on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Carl Johnson officiating. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Scanlan may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 6390 Fly Rd., E. Syracuse, NY 13057.

Hector Urquiza
Restaurant Manager, 65

Hector S. Urquiza of Monticello, a restaurant manager for San Giovese in Pine Bush and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in Monticello. He was 65.
The son of the late Serbando and Aveangelina Ramirez Urquiza, he was born May 26, 1945 in Cuba. He was married to Donna Gowan.
Mr. Urquiza is survived by his wife, Donna Gowan; two sons, Rafael Urquiza and Hector Urquiza Jr.; two daughters, Sheri Graziano and Nicole DiConstanzo; and four grandchildren, Andrew, Rafael, Isabella and Roman.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 4 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 34 Upper Main Street, Callicoon.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Research Hospital in Houston, Texas.
