Basha Kill gets its annual cleaning day

By Anya Tikka
WURTSBORO — About 60 people came to the annual Basha Kill cleanup day on a sunny Saturday morning, said Basha Kill Area Association’s President of Paula Medley. Several 4-H clubs and Monticello High School Eco Club had signed up as groups.
Dylan Broder, 12, came with her mother Jackie Broder who’s on the Basha Kill Area Association Board and was helping her with the sorting out. “It’s a good cause,” she said.
The trash, when sorted, will be taken to the landfills in Monticello and Mamakating, and go through the recycling programs, added Fred Harding, another board member helping with the sorting at the parking lot. Tables were ready with containers for the sorting into aluminum cans, plastic, glass, and paper, and trash.
The aluminum mounted nature photo donated by Jim Carrey of Wurtsboro was the prize in a $5 ticket entry for the lottery to raise funds. It usually brings in about $100, said Medley.
The parking lot at the Haven Road entrance to Basha Kill was lined up with trucks and cars, and the volunteers walked along the roadside and in the paths to clean up the park.
