Leon C. Mc Kay
Ret. Truck Driver, 83

Leon C. “Lightning” Mc Kay of Parksville, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 29, 2007. He was 83.
Mr. Mc Kay was born May 19, 1924 in Jeffersonville to the late Chester and Lulu Luckey Mc Kay. He was married to Edith Ackerley.
Mr. Mc Kay retired after 40 years as a truck driver for Asphalt Distributing in Liberty. He was a member of Teamsters Local #445 in Newburgh; a World War II Army Air Force veteran; Member of Liberty Chapter I.O.O.B., and the Clarence Hoyt V.F.W. Post #9217 in Liberty.
Survivors include his wife, Edith at home; three sons, Steven Osterhout and wife, Sheila, of Johnsburg, Thomas Mc Kay and wife, Cathy of Parksville, and Christopher Mc Kay of White Sulphur Springs; one stepson, Bobby Mc Kay and companion, Sharon, of Monticello; four daughters, Maxine Porter and husband, Rick, of Prattsville, Nancy Marks of Liberty, Bonnie Wescott and husband, Sid, of Sherbourne, and Susan Jones and husband, Stanley, of Neversink; and one stepdaughter, Beverly Frunzi and husband, Peter of South Fallsburg; one aunt, Vera Bernhardt of Jeffersonville; sixteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Elnore Blum.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 2 at Ramsay’s Funeral Homes, Inc. The Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiated.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

Ernest D. Slagus
Ret. NYC Police Officer, 83

Ernest D. Slagus of Livingston Manor, died Friday, July 27, 2007 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 83.
Ernest was born April 10, 1924 in Brooklyn, the son of Simon and Frances Slagus.
He was married to Nelly Slagus; the father of two sons, Raymond and Daniel; stepfather to Gloria; grandfather to Michael, Jennifer and Kimberly Slagus and Christopher Clark; great-grandfather to Joseph Clark; and brother to Al Slagus and Amelia Senaitis.
Ernest was a World War II veteran, who fought in the Pacific Campaign as an Army Medic, receiving many citations. He was a retired New York City Police Officer, serving 24 years.
After losing his first wife, Mary, he moved to Livingston Manor for his retirement years. Here he met Nelly Clark, and they have been married for the last 30 years.
He was laid to rest in the St. Charles Cemetery on Long Island on August 2.

Ernie Ross
Heavy Equip. Operator, 54

Ernie Ross of Long Eddy, a heavy equipment operator for nineteen years for the town of Fremont, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007 in Callicoon. He was 54.
The son of Ernest E. and Helen Metzler Ross, he was born July 26, 1953 in Ft. Hood, Killeen, Texas.
He was former chief of Long Eddy Fire Department and was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his parents, Ernest and Helen Metzler Ross; his wife Sandy Neer Ross; his children, Jessica Kenyon and husband Andrew of Long Eddy, Casey Ross of Long Eddy, Emmylou Ross of Syracuse, Garrett Ross of Long Eddy and his fiancee Kira Irwin of Honesdale, Pa., Shannon Boudwin and husband Dale of Houma, La., Christopher Ross and wife Erica of Montegut, La.; one brother, Henry Ross of Equinunk, Pa.; five grandchildren, Andrew Kenyon Jr., Brooke Boudwin, Krissy, Alyssa and Gage Ross.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday, August 3 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 34 Upper Main St., Callicoon.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, August 4 at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in Rock Valley Cemetery, Long Eddy.

Janet L. Jankowski
Special Ed Teacher, 56

Janet L. Jankowski, a lifelong resident of Middletown, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at ORMC’s Horton Campus in Middletown after a short illness. She was 56.
The daughter of the late Chester Kurdyla and Roberta Zelinski, she was born September 14, 1950 in Goshen.
She married Henry Jankowski on April 14, 1973 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Goshen.
Janet worked as a Special Education teacher for Orange-Ulster BOCES. Janet was a helpful and generous wife and mother who had a big heart. She was a true friend, who cared selflessly for others. Janet was a strong-willed woman who could not be persuaded to do anything she was not ready to do. Although she enjoyed cruising with her classic car and being with friends, the highlight of her life was her granddaughter, Savanna Rose.
In addition to her mother, Janet is survived by her loving husband, Henry at home; son, Andrew and his wife Kerri of Wurtsboro; and her daughter, Jo Ellen Hundeland and her husband Kenny of Bloomingburg; her treasured granddaughter, Savanna Rose; godson, Michael; five sisters, Lynne, Gail, Laura, Jamie and Lorraine and her husband Dave Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in remembrance was held Thursday, August 2 at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., Middletown.
Cremation was private.

Kristopher R. Long
Construction Worker, 27

Kristopher R. Long of Port Jervis, a construction worker and lifelong area resident, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at Cape Coral, Fla. He was 27.
The son of Brian and Pamelia Collette Long, he was born May 19, 1980 in Port Jervis.
Survivors include his companion, Briana Walsh of Cape Coral, Fla.; his daughter, Alexa at home; his parents, Pamelia and Brian Long of Port Jervis; his father, Steven Goble of Forestburgh; two sisters, Nicole Long of Port Jervis and Sarah Goble of Fosterdale; his maternal grandmother, Pamelia Stevens of Matamoras, Pa.; his maternal grandparents, Bob and Maryellen Stevens of Matamoras, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Adele LaBarr of Narrowsburg; paternal grandparents, Alice and Robert Long of Matamoras; his uncle, Kyle Stevens.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 3 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis. The Rev. Glenn Scheyhing will officiate.
Burial will be made in Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey.
