LIBERTY — September 5, 2006 — The two top teams in the Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation’s Women’s Beach Volleyball League played the season-ending title game last Wednesday night at Hanofee Park.
The championship contest pitted the Sand-witches, who were undefeated during the regular season, against the Sand Sations.
For the last three years, the Sand Sations team took first place in the league. This year, Sand Sations had three losses, two of which were to the Sand-witches.
The two teams played best two-out-of-three games to see who was going to take home the first place trophy.
With the first championship game starting at 7 p.m., these barefooted women were ready to hit the sand.
The Sand-witches took an early lead with a score of 3-0 after the first couple of volleys. The Sand Sations then got on the scoreboard by recording two points.
The Sand-witches overpowered the Sand Sations and scored another six points to take a 9-2 lead. The Sand Sations only scored another three points during the first game, as the Sand-witches prevailed, 15-5.
During the second game, the Sand Sations and the Sand-witches were neck and neck. Midway through the game, the score was tied at 9-9.
But the Sand-witches then started serving the ball and would not let up. They scored six consecutive points to post a 15-9 victory, winning the match two games to none.
All of the Sand-witches players will receive T-shirts for winning the league championship. The members of the Sand-witches include: Joan Evans (captain), Terry Greenspan, Susan Hemmer, Judy Magie, Barbara Neist and Tina Schultz.
The members of the Sand Sations squad are: Debbie Bullock, Rhea DeMaria (captain), Alyssa Kelly, Barbara Long, Lindsay Loos and Tracy Magie.
“This is a great league because it lets moms come out and play volleyball and exercise while their children play at the park,” DeMaria said.
Also other players commented on how they are able get their aggressions out while playing volleyball.
The four teams in the league this summer were the BaDaBings, Sand-witches, Sand Sations and Tumbleweeds.
The Sand-witches team presented DeMaria with a bouquet of flowers for all the hard work and dedication she puts in to organize the league every year.
Following the title match, the players from the four teams enjoyed a picnic. All the players said they were very appreciative of the Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Department for providing the court in order for them to play volleyball throughout the summer.
