FREMONT CENTER — July 18, 2006 – The Matthew’s on Main softball team racked up another tournament win this weekend at the Fremont Center softball field.
Matthew’s defeated Ronnie’s Ringers, 10-9, in the championship game of a benefit tournament for Lenny Merit.
But Ronnie’s Ringers didn’t give up without a fight.
With a score of 2-2 in the bottom of the first, the game promised to be a close one.
Matthew’s shed some doubt on this, however, after they scored a whopping eight runs in the top of the second inning.
Unlike many of the other games that Matthew’s has played this summer, the run-fest stopped after the second inning.
George Muller, playing for Ronnie’s, scored a run in the bottom of the third. Despite this, things were looking bleak for Ronnie’s.
Until the bottom of the fifth, anyway. In that frame, Ronnie’s cut the Matthew’s lead from 10-3 to 10-7.
In Sunday afternoon’s blistering heat, Ronnie’s decided to turn the temperature up just a little bit more in the bottom of the seventh by scoring two more runs.
If the Matthew’s on Main players weren’t sweating enough, Ronnie’s had the bases loaded and seemed ready to take on the world.
With two outs, however, their streak was cut short when Paul Schwatz’s fly ball landed nicely in the mitt of a Matthew’s outfielder.
With this, Matthew’s escaped with a one-run victory.
