FALLSBURG GOALIE ABBY Smassanow kicks the ball back upfield after making a save in Friday’s non-league game at The Family School.

All It Took
Was One Goal

By Ted Waddell
HANCOCK — October 12, 2004 – In Friday’s non-league soccer match between the Lady Falcons of the Family Foundation School and the Fallsburg Lady Comets, one goal made all the difference.
The only goal of the contest was scored by The Family School’s Kristen Schroeder on an assist from Samantha Fairchild at 20:45 in the second half.
The Lady Falcons then held that advantage until the final whistle to record a 1-0 victory.
Goalies for the match were Kathryn Ryman for The Family School (2-8) and Abby Smassanow for Fallsburg (1-6). Ryman made nine saves on the afternoon and Smassanow registered 24 saves.
“This was a very good game for us,” said Fallsburg Coach Lee Smassanow. “We were two well-matched teams, and the girls played their hearts out.”
Coach Smassanow singled out a few players for praise in the match against the Lady Falcons. “Jillian Jonas had a really good game in front of the goal… Abby Smassanow in the goal and with her towering punts back to midfield… [and] Jen Orlan had a really good game in the middle.
“It was a pleasure to watch them today,” he added. “They really got out there and hustled.”
“It’s too bad we didn’t win, but that’s how it goes,” Smassanow commented.
Family School Coach Joe Lichty said the win for good for his squad.
“The girls played well and worked very hard for the goal we got,” he said.
His take on the 2004 soccer season?
“They’re having fun and working hard, that’s all I care about,” Lichty replied. “They’re working hard, have good attitude and effort.”
