LIBERTY — September 17, 2004 – Despite drawing first blood at 5:00 in the opening frame on an unassisted boot into the net by Jay Samant, the boys varsity soccer team from Liberty High was defeated, 3-1, by the Bulldogs of Sullivan West.
The Bulldogs went on to score two unassisted goals in the first half: John Reynolds at 17:00 and at 25:00, a shot past the home team’s goalie by Joe Winski.
In the second half, Sullivan West's Will O'Brien scored the final goal of the match at 26:00 on an assist by Kevin Cappiello.
Joe Layman anchoed the cage for the Bulldogs. Liberty switched keepers at the half, as Ramon Romero took over from Nick Cadevoco.
Sullivan West had 25 shots on goal to the Indians’ 12. Layman saved 9 of the Liberty shots, while Indian keepers swept away 18 Bulldog boots.
“They went to the ball better than we did today," said Hazel Yaun, coach of the Liberty booters.
“I think we're a much better team than we showed this afternoon," she added.
The Bulldogs coach's take on the game?
“We played hard, but we definitely have a lot of stuff to work on," said Joe Ebeling.
He credited the play of Liberty's first half goalie Cadevico, "He played very well in the half."
Then Sullivan West's boys varsity co-coach handed out some praise to his own hard charging lads.
“We had a real nice game from Joe Winski, Joe Layman and John Reynolds," said Ebeling.
