Mary P. Downs
Ret. Offc. Mgr., 80

Mary P. Downs of Liberty, a 20-year area resident and the retired office manager for William J. Foss Inc. in Brooklyn, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Elsie Paterson Mitchell, she was born December 24, 1923, in Queens. She was the widow of Richard Downs who died in 2000.
Mrs. Downs was a member of the Sullivan County Cooperative Extension, the Calico Geese Quilting Club and St. Paul's Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard B. Jr. and Marilyn Downs of Equinunk, Pa., and Thomas and Rose Downs of Grahamsville; a daughter, Patricia Elsasser of Liberty; and two grandchildren, Mitchell Downs and Gregory Allen.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Saturday from noon until 2 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Francis Waite officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Dorothea Hill
Homemaker

Dorothea Hill of Mississippi, a former resident of Jeffersonville and the widow of Frank Hill, died Tuesday, January 5, 2004 in Mississippi.
She is survived by two sons, Craig and Frank Hill; a daughter, Lynne; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 16, at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Local arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Warren Clopton, 68
MR Groundskeeper

Warren Clopton of Monticello, a groundskeeper for the Monticello Raceway, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 68 years of age.
The son the late Oscar and Bernice Crooks Clopton, he was born August 22, 1935, in Bayminette, Ala.
Mr. Clopton was a member of the Bethlehem Temple Church in Monticello.
In a family statement, it was said, "In loving memory of Warren 'Buddy' Clopton - when Buddy smiled, we knew everything was alright. We will miss you, our Buddy."
He is survived by three brothers, Daniel Clopton, Solomon Hooks and his wife, Tanya, and Reginald Clopton, all of Bayminette, Ala.; two sisters, Gladys Clopton of Bayminette, Ala., and Shirley Smith and her husband, Jasper, of Monticello; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Juanita Barnes and a brother-in-law, Willie Barnes.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello, on Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at King's Chapel, Spring St., Monticello, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mervin Armstead officiating.
Burial will be made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Delila G. Petro
Homemaker, 91

Delila G. Petro of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, December 29, 2003, at the Ten Broeck Common Nursing Home in Lake Katrine. She was 91 years of age.
The daughter of the late Elmer R. and Lizzie Jane LeRoy Grant, she was born November 7, 1912, in Bradley. She was the widow of George Petro.
Mrs. Petro is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Brenda Petro of Bradley; a daughter, and son-in-law, Alma and Richard Woolbert of Silver Spring, Md.; a grandson, Curt Woolbert of Silver Spring, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.

Rita G. D'Agata
Homemaker, 86

Rita G. D'Agata of New Port Richey, Fla., a homemaker and a former resident of White Sulphur Springs, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Bayonet Point, Florida. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Irving and Mary Corry Mulvihill, she was born April 1, 1917, in New York City. She was the widow of Peter D'Agata.
Mrs. D 'Agata was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty.
She is survived by two sons, Peter D'Agata of New Port Richey, Fla., and Stephen D'Agata of Kauneonga Lake; a daughter, Ida Antonelle of Watchung, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, John P. D'Agata.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty at 11:45 a.m. on Friday with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial will be made in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Hilgrove Brewer
Dishwasher, 59

Hilgrove Brewer of Monticello, a dishwasher at the former Gager's Diner in Monticello for 23 years and a 30-year area resident, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 59 years of age.
Born in Boston, Mass., he lived for a short time in Philadelphia, Pa.
It was said, "Mr. Brewer was an avid sports fan and his statistical knowledge of baseball was without peer. He had a great dedication to work and a very eccentric character, which was well loved and appreciated by many."
Although he had many friends, there are no known relatives.
Services were held Wednesday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial was made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

Diane L. Brokhoff
Homemaker, 41

Diane Lynn Brokhoff of Monticello, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at her home. She was 41 years of age.
She was born March 7, 1962, in Ridgewood, N.J.
In a family statement, it was said, "Diane was a loving person who put everyone else above herself. The world won't be the same without her as she will be truly missed."
She is survived by her father, Ronald Schaeffer and his wife, Gayle, of Suffern; her mother, Trudy Wylie of New Windsor; her husband, Franco Incanno, at home; a daughter, Tanya Schaeffer, at home; three brothers, Michael Schaeffer of Central Valley, Keith Barclay of Sloatsburg and Bruce Barclay of Suffern; three sisters, Cindy Gross of Milford, Pa., Maryann Dawson of Suffern, and Tina Cloran of Queensbury; and 16 nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello on Wednesday.

Millicent Elmore
Ret. Farmer, 88

Millicent Haight Trowbridge Elmore of Middletown, a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Middletown. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late William Jay and Helen Knapp Reed Trowbridge, she was born May 13, 1915, in Monticello. She was the widow of Floyd Elmore who died in 1994.
Her American ancestry dated back to 1729, before the Revolutionary War. She and her late husband owned a farm.
Mrs. Elmore was a member of the Beaverkill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had been active in church activities and the Grange in the past.
She is survived by several relatives. Mrs. Elmore was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Anton,
Services were held Thursday at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown with the Rev. William Wildeman officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Burial of the cremains will be made in the family lot in the Hurleyville Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ronald D. Paes
Truck Driver, 62

Ronald D. Paes of Loch Sheldrake, a truck driver, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center, He was 62 years of age.
The son of the late Antonio and Florence Geizelhardt Paes, he was born September 15, 1941, in Ellenville.
A Naval veteran, he served on the USS Kaskaskia.
Mr. Paes is survived by his wife, Laurie Edwards, and a daughter, Renee Paes, both of Sundown; two sons, Kenneth Paes of Kerhonkson and Steven Paes of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two brothers, Anthony Paes of Napanoch and Joseph Paes of Middletown; three sisters, Donna Schoonmaker and Gail Countryman of Accord and Linda Roosa of Wurtsboro; several step-children; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews He was predeceased by a daughter, Amy, and a brother, John Paes.
A memorial service will be held at a later date

Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

Leonard G. Walz
Ret. Tool Maker, 85

Leonard George Walz of East Branch, a retired tool maker for Bendix in Sidney, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at the Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late George M. and Ethel Mae Sampson Walz, he was born October 31, 1918, in New York City.
He was a World War II veteran.
Mr. Walz is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and David Vargas of Silver City, N. Mex.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Jeannet Walz of Swan Lake; a granddaughter, Andrea Vargas; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Burial will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

Howard Anthony
Ret. Cook, 68

Howard "Howie" Anthony of Barryville, a retired cook for the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at his home. He was 68 years of age.
The son of the late Floyd and Louise Brown Anthony, he was born December 19, 1935, in New York City.
Mr. Anthony was a member of Bethany Fellowship in Eldred and a shop steward for CSEA.
In a family statement, it was said, "On the snowy morning of January 6, 2004, Howard Anthony, beloved husband and father, went to be with the Lord. He was greatly loved and will be infinitely missed."
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maxine Wayne Anthony of Barryville; four sons, Marc, Michael, Jonathan and Kyle Anthony, all of Barryville; two daughters, Melissa Martinez and her husband, Carlos, of Woodbourne, and Kelley Sligh of Edgewood, Md.; three grandchildren, Shanice, Blaine and R.B.; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his dog and good friend, Ivan.
Services were held Thursday evening at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville.
Burial was made in the Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

Virginia E. Dunn
Homemaker, 87

Virginia E. Dunn of Hasbrouck, a homemaker, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Daniel and Edith Davis Akerley, she was born October 28, 1916, in Willowemoc. She was the widow of Harold Cross Sr. to whom she was married 50 years
Mrs. Dunn is survived by her husband, Herbert Dunn,, at home; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Lillian and Gordon Miller of Liberty, Edith and Ralph Breakey of Swinging Bridge, Viola and Richard Benjamin of Southwoods, Louise Seitz and her companion, Jeff, of Woodbourne, and Donna and Peter Unger of Hurleyville; two sons, Harold Cross Jr. of Fallsburg and Roger Cross of Arkansas; four sisters, Audrey Curry of Curry, Vera Atkins of Neversink, Ella Charter of Grahamsville and Thelma Dobell of Florida; a brother, John Akerley of Neversink; 42 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three daughters, Roberta Schmitz, Dolores Katz and Dorothy Cross, a son, Robert Cross, eight grandchildren, nine brothers and a sister.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 Main St., Woodbourne, with Pastor Carl Caskey officiating.
Burial will be made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.

Kane T. Nyman
Iron Worker, 27

Kane Tucker Nyman of Woodridge, a lifelong area resident and an iron worker for Hi-Tech Construction in Monticello, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at the Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 27 years of age.
The son of Richard Allen and Heather Brooks Leonard Nyman, he was born September 24, 1976, in Middletown.
He is survived by his parents of Woodridge; a daughter, Kelsey Brooke Nyman of Woodridge; two sisters, Judith Polomik and Dana Lynn Post, both of Pine Bush; three brothers, Chance Kyle Nyman of New Jersey, Mickey Todd Nyman of Westbrookville and Richard Allen Nyman Jr. of Hinesville, Ga.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middletown.

John T. Lawler
Ret. School Supt., 72

John T. Lawler of Canandaigua, a retired physical education teacher and a retired superintendent of schools for the Monticello School District, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at his home. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Edward and Margaret Bruce Lawler, he was born in Fort Edward.
Mr. Lawler graduated from Fort Edward High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from SUNY Brockport. He received his Master's degree in Education from SUNY Albany and began his career as a physical education teacher at Monticello High School.
He was a former member of St. Peter's Church in Monticello. After moving to Canandaigua in 1999, he worked part time as the coordinator for student teacher placement at Keuka College. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Mr. Lawler is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnn McCarty Lawler; three sons and two daughters-in-law, John E. Lawler of Watervliet, Kevin P. and Barbara Lawler of Wrentham, Mass., and Major Kelly J. and Mary Lawler of Harker Heights, Tex.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill A. and Robert Fogel of Geneva; and seven grandchildren, Kristen, Erin, Meghan, Kerry, Johnnie, Grace and Shannon.
A Memorial Mass was offered at St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua on Wednesday.

Bruna H. Rosengard
Ret. Library Wkr., 94

Bruna Hazan Rosengard of Providence, R.I., a former resident of Brookline, Mass., and a 10-year worker at the Mugar Library at Boston University, died Thursday, January 1, 2004, at the Steere House Nursing Facility in Providence, R.I. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late Rayna and Samuel Hazan and step-daughter of the late Rose Hazan, she was born in New York City. She was the widow of David Eli Rosengard.
Mrs. Rosengard is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Daniel Subotnik of Providence, R.I.; a son Robert S. (Gandalf) Rosengard of Smallwood; two grandchildren, Eva Subotnik and Joseph Subotnik; two brothers, Louis Hazan and Earl Hazan; and two sisters, Ruth Pearson Long and Leonore Levy. She was predeceased by two sisters, Sondra Hazan and Sarah Goldberger, and a daughter-in-law, Carol Rosengard.
Services were held at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, Mass., on Sunday.
Interment was made at the Atereth Israel Cemetery in West Roxbury, Mass.
