MONTICELLO’S KYLE FRIED pins both of Port Jervis’ R. J. Scabeck’s arms behind him in Thursday night’s OCIAA National Conference meet.

One Big Win
Is Not Enough

MONTICELLO — February 4, 2003 – What do you do after winning your 100th career varsity wrestling match?
If you are Monticello’s Kyle Fried, you go out and earn win number 101.
Fried, a junior, did just that on Thursday night in the Panthers’ dual meet versus visiting Port Jervis.
After posting his 100th varsity victory in a January 24 OCIAA National Conference meet at Ellenville, Fried scored a 9-1 major decision win over Port Jervis’ R.J. Scabeck in the evening’s 135 lb. match.
Unfortunately, that was one of the few highlights for Monticello as Port Jervis recorded a 52-28 victory in the OCIAA National Conference match. Port improved to 7-2, 4-0 OCIAA, while Monticello fell to 3-3-1, 1-2 OCIAA.
Fried improved his varsity record to 101-17.
“That was a big win for him tonight,” Monticello Coach Ed Kaufmann said of Fried’s triumph. “He totally dominated his opponent.”
Fried noted that one of his long-range goals is to complete his varsity career with Monticello Central School’s best overall record. Marcus Hutchins, who wrestled at Monticello Central School from 1987 to 1991, posted a career mark of 104 wins and just 22 losses.
“Another one of my goals is to get 30 wins this season,” said Fried, who has racked up 23 wins and suffered only one loss during the 2002-2003 season. “And of course, I want to do well at sectionals.”
