MONTICELLO March 21, 2003 Since Shop-Rite moved out of the Village of Monticello, various residents have been clamoring for a supermarket within the village limits.
Village officials and others have been trying for the last few years to bring a new supermarket to occupy the old space at the The Mountain Mall.
Yesterday, Mountain Pacific Realty officials, owners of the Mountain Mall, announced the signing of ALDI Grocery Store at the Shop-Rite Store. The store will be 13,000 square feet about half of what is available.
ALDI bills itself as a limited discount assortment international retailer which first opened over 40 years ago in Germany. ALDI entrance into the United States was in southeastern Iowa in 1976.
They now have more than 670 stores in 25 states from Kansas to the eastern seaboard. The chain has thousands of stores internationally.
ALDI features approximately 700 of the items most commonly used in the home including canned fruit, spring water, juices, cookies, cola, candy, meats, fruits, paper towels, and many other items.
ALDI will be submitting its plans to the Planning Board shortly, hoping to open some time this summer.
Other stores at the mall include First Class Formal Wear, Ming Moon Chinese Restaurant, Weight Watchers, Dollar General, Rent-A-Center, Linen Communications Cellular One, GNC Nutrition, Roma Pizza, and the Silver Lining Laundry Mat.
