ELDRED — December 20, 2002 – The Eldred Lady Yellowjackets grabbed control of Tuesday night’s OCIAA Division V basketball game in the first quarter.
Eldred used an aggressive, pressing defense to cause several turnovers and raced out to a 17-0 lead after the first eight minutes of play in their contest versus visiting S. S. Seward.
Seward (1-3, 0-2 OCIAA) did not score until Theresa Space converted a layup 30 seconds into the second period to make it a 17-2 game.
Over the second, third and fourth quarters, each squad scored 31 points as Eldred (2-3, 1-0 OCIAA) recorded a 48-31 win.
“We just came out flat tonight,” Seward Coach Chris Knittel said. “Eldred pressed us hard in that first quarter. They deserve credit, they played all out.
“This is the third year I’ve been coaching and it seems like every time we play Eldred, we have just three good quarters. Hopefully, we’ll be able to put together four good quarters of play next time.”
Leading Eldred to the win were Jessica Cherry and Jenna Fredericks, each of whom scored 12 points on the evening. Lauren Timan added nine points and six assists for the Lady Yellowjackets.
“We seemed to have control early and everybody got to play tonight,” Eldred Coach Frank Kean said. “Our girls played a good game. Our offense was clicking and that was good to see.”
Space scored a game-high 15 points for the Lady Spartans.
