KEIRANE BARNICLE OF Monticello crosses the finish line in Saturday’s race.

CASA Fun Run
Is Just That

By Matt Youngfrau
BETHEL — October 11, 2002 – The Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program has been a very important part of the Sullivan County Family Court.
CASA takes care of the children of the Family Court. These children are the victims of crime or caught in the middle of cases involving their families.
The Sullivan County CASA Sixth Annual 5K Fun Run/Fun Walk took place on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Lake Superior Park in Bethel. There was also a one–mile children’s run.
All–in–all, there were approximately 30 walkers and runners and nearly 20 children participating in the event.
“This is a fun thing for a family to do together,” commented CASA Director Pat Vasquez. “Families like to come to this.”
“This has been an absolutely beautiful day,” Sullivan County Family Court Judge Mark Meddaugh remarked. “We had a good turnout. Everybody is a winner today and everybody goes away with a prize.”
Overall, the 5K run winners were Curtis Browne from White Lake and Keirane Barnicle of Monticello. In fact, they finished within seconds of each other. Browne finished at a time of 22:31 and Barnicle came in at 23:05.
“I liked the scenery and the sense of the leaves,” Browne said after the race. “I enjoyed the race. I liked the crowd, there were a lot of good people here.”
Barnicle concurred with Browne.
“It was a peaceful October afternoon and winning was only half the enjoyment,” she stated. “It was a good course with beautiful scenery.”
Afterwards, all of the participants received medals. The group then enjoyed pizza, cupcakes, and each other’s company. It was a good way to cap off a good day.
