CALLICOON — July 30, 2002 – The Delaware Youth Center 5K River Race just keeps getting bigger and better.
More than 100 walkers and runners participated in the fourth annual event Saturday morning in Callicoon.
The race raised a total of $1,450 for the Delaware Youth Center.
Organizers noted that the race has grown every year. The first 5K River Race, which was held in 1999, drew 33 runners and walkers.
Saturday’s event was slightly different, as the start/finish line was moved to a new location. In past years, the River Race began on Audley Doerr Drive and the particpants had to turn near the Delaware Free Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library before heading down River Road. This year, however, the runners and walkers started near the Fleet Bank and went down River Road appoximately 1.5 miles before turning around and returning to the start/finish line.
The first runner to cross the line was Keith Johnson. He completed the 5K course in a time of 16:22.
The first woman to finish was Tamar Senyak, who ran the course in 20:34.
“I’m so excited, I haven’t won a race in 10 years,” said Senyak, who lives in Chester and is a member of the Orange County Runners Club. “There was a woman about 10 seconds behind me and when I heard her, I started to push. She made me run better.”
That woman behind Senyak was Valerie Kilcoin, who finished the race in a time of 20:37. Kilcoin placed 23rd in the overall standings.
“The race just gets better and better every year,” said Delaware Youth Center volunteer Jacky Robisch. “We had a great race. We’re really pleased with the community support for the youth center.”
