Raymond Pomeroy
Businessman, 85

Raymond N. Pomeroy of Roscoe, the retired owner of Elliott and Pomeroy Real Estate in Roscoe and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Frank H. and Matilda Ernst Pomeroy, he was born May 13, 1917, in Gloucester, Mass.
Mr. Pomeroy was a member of the United Church of Roscoe, the Rockland Hose Co. #1, a life member of the Methol Hunting Club, a member and past president of the Roscoe Kiwanis Club and a member and past president of the Roscoe-Rockland Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Twin Village Golf Club, an original member of the Sullivan County Planning Board and a member of the Sullivan County Board of Realtors.
He was also a former member of the Roscoe Hose Co. #1, a former member of the ABC Board, a former member of the Sullivan County Democratic Committee and a former Town of Rockland Democratic Committeeman. A 1934 graduate of Roscoe Central School, he had managed the Victory Store in Roscoe, had been the owner of the Roscoe Dairy and had been the owner of the Roscoe House, before operating in real estate.
Mr. Pomeroy is survived by his wife, Ruth A. Pless Pomeroy, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin N. and Nancy Pomeroy of Asheville, N.C., and Peter A. and Monica Pomeroy of Fernandia Beach, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny E. and Jeffery Constant of Neversink; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday at the United Church of Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey and Lucille Freyer officiating.
Burial will be made at a later date in the Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Church or the R&R Volunteer Ambulance Corps, both at Roscoe, N.Y. 12776.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe.

Ruth Hardenbergh
Homemaker, 97

Ruth L. Hardenbergh of Roscoe, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, December 14, 2002, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi. She was 97 years of age.
The daughter of the late Emory P. and Lena B. Forsyth Frisbee, she was born June 3, 1905, in West Kortright. She was the widow of Harold C. Campbell who died in 1947 and Burr C. Hardenbergh who died in 1970.
Mrs. Hardenbergh was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Monticello. She had been a correspondent for the Walton Reporter newspaper in Delaware County and was valedictorian of her high school graduation class.
In a statement, it was said, "Ruth will be remembered as being very helpful to her friends, neighbors, church and the residents of the Countryside Care Center."
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Emory J. and Janice Campbell of Roscoe; two daughters, Leora Graves of Tucson, Ariz., and Lena Ruland and her husband, William, of Jefferson; a sister, Eulena Turner of Oneonta; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be held at the Bovina Center Cemetery in Bovina Center in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the R & R Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Roscoe, N.Y. 12776.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe.

Mary Lojkovic
Ret. Seamstress, 100

Mary Lojkovic of Purdy's, a retired seamstress and a resident of that area since 1997, formerly a 36-year resident of Lake Huntington, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, at the Salem Hills Health Care Center in Purdy's. She was 100 years of age.
The daughter of the late Andrea and Maria Murzlak Kapral, she was born September 22, 1902, in Benwood, W. Va.
She is survived by five grandchildren, Frank, Kenneth, Madeline, Julie and Margaret, and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Thomas Jones officiating.
Burial was made in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, Lake Huntington, N.Y. 12752.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.

Lydia Clark
Homemaker, 88

Lydia Clark of Grahamsville, a homemaker and a 66-year area resident, died Sunday, December 22, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Liberty. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles B. and Sarah Elizabeth Pintler Doll, she was born July 30, 1914, in Ferndale. She was the widow of Bruce Clark.
Mrs. Clark was a member of the Tri-Valley AARP Chapter 1604 and a member of the Grahamsville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by five children and their spouses, Allen B. and Nancy Clark of Livingston Manor, Frederick E. and Louise Clark of Grahamsville, Elizabeth Frances and Robert Torrens of Liberty, Charles L. Clark of Grahamsville, and Jean Margaret and Carl Wendler of Liberty; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandchild and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Loucks Funeral Home, Route 209, Ellenville, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia Ackerman officiating.
Cremation will be private.
Burial will be made in the Bethel Cemetery.

Angela Cahn
Ret. X-ray Tech, 76

Angela Cahn of Loch Sheldrake, a retired X-ray technician for the New York State Department of Corrections and Mount Sinai Medical Center, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Salvatore and Yolanda Palazzola, she was born October 1, 1926, in New York City. She was the widow of Jack Cahn.
Mrs. Cahn had also been a singer and dancer in New York City where she met her husband.
She is survived by two brothers, Edward and Robert Palazzola; two nephews, Charles and Daniel Cahn; many nieces and nephews; two special friends, "Biz" and Bob Fiory; a dear neighbor, Geraldine Rundle; and all those who gave a loving, helping and supportive hand to her at a very critical and much needed time of her life. She also leaves behind two dogs, Sugar and Pepper.
Services were held Monday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
Entombment was made at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Middle Hope.
Memorial contributions may be made to a senior citizen in your neighborhood in her name.

Grace A. Adams
Homemaker, 81

Grace A. Adams of Callicoon Center, a homemaker and a 19-year area resident, died Friday, December 20, 2002, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Lenard and Angeline Cancemi Saladino, she was born July 15, 1921, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her husband, Augustus Adams; two sons, James Adams and his wife, Wendy, of Callicoon Center and August Adams of Wappingers Falls; two grandchildren, Lenny Adams and Melissa Rackowicz; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Jared Rackowicz; and a sister, Rose Quarataro of Selden.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville with Father Paul Osbourne, O.F.M., officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Vincent Mobilia, 60
Owned Crosstown Collision

Vincent N. "Jimmy" Mobilia of Bloomingburg, the owner/operator of Crosstown Collision in Bloomingburg, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, December 19, 2002. He was 60 years of age.
The son of Anna "Cam" Russo Mobilia Angus and the late Nicholas V. Mobilia, he was born June 4, 1942, in New York City.
In a family statement, it was said, "Jimmy was a warm, loving and giving person. He was well-loved by his family and friends who were always welcomed at his home at any hour of the day."
He is survived by his companion, Tina Greene, at home; his mother and her husband, James Angus of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five children, James Scott Mobilia of Long Island, Donna Blake of Holbrook, Ron Mobilia and his wife, Janice, of Wellington, Fla., Michael Mobilia of Middletown and Nicholas Mobilia of Bloomingburg; three grandchildren, Melissa, Thomas and Alexis; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cam and Anthony Monaco of Middletown and Lisa and Frank Chiarelli of Oceanside; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Middletown.
Burial was made in St. Joseph Cemetery in Middletown.

Bella Arvidson
Homemaker, 83

Bella "Mickey" Arvidson of Liberty, a homemaker, died Saturday, December 21, 2002. She was 83 years of age.
She is survived by two brothers, Gilbert Arvidson and William Fay; and seven nieces and nephews, Dianne, Patricia, Joan, Keith, Kevin, Lynn and Lisa. She was predeceased by two brothers, Vincent and Robert Arvidson.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Van Emburgh-Sneider Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave., Ramsey, N.J.
Interment will be made in the Crest Haven Memorial Park in Clifton, N.J.

Kent Van Nostrand
Ret. Correcs. Offc., 95

Kent Van Nostrand of Woodbourne, a retired correctional officer in Woodbourne, died Friday, December 20, 2002 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 95 years of age.
The son of the late Fred and Elizabeth Lyons Van Nostrand, he was born May 28, 1907, in Dalton. He was the widower of Doris Van Nostrand who passed away after 50 years of marriage.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, he enlisted at the age of 36 to serve on a troop carrier in the South Pacific. He was a life member of the Stangel-Bernstein Post No. 8086, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Woodbourne; the American Legion; and a faithful parishioner of the Woodbourne Reform Church.
Mr. Van Nostrand was an avid athlete, playing baseball and was third baseman for the Sullivan County All-Star League for many years, being voted best third baseman during that time. He loved to ski, which he started doing at the age of 50, and belonged to the over-70 skiers club. He skied until he was 80 years of age.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Emden of Clearwater, Fla., and Aileen Halchak and her husband, John, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Woodbourne; five grandchildren, Philip Emden, Michael Kwarlter, Kathy Lindblad, Kim Salva and J.W. Halchak; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Quentin, Robert and his twin, Kermit.
Services were held Monday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne with the Rev. Barbara Claypool officiating.
Interment was made in the Woodbourne Reform Church Cemetery with full military honors.

Julia E. Nassau
Retired Clerk, 82

Julia E. Nassau of Liberty, a retired clerk, died Sunday, December 22, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter of the late Roman and Helen Piasicki Piercynski, she was born November 2, 1920, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Alexander Joseph Nassau.
Mrs. Nassau was a member of the AARP, the Golden Park Senior Citizens, and a parishioner of St. Peter's Church, all in Liberty.
She is survived by a son, Christopher Nassau of Lynbrook and Linda Kowalick and her husband, Norman, of Woodbourne; four grandchildren, Erica, Nicholas, Michael and Jillian; and a great-grandson, Jake. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kenneth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Interment will be made at noon on Thursday in the Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.

Jimmy Walter
Security Aide, 37

Jimmy James Walter, a security hospital treatment aide with Mid-Hudson Forensic and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown. He was 37 years of age.
The son of Odies Clay and Alice Langley Walter, he was born September 14, 1965, in Middletown.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Swett Walter, and a daughter, Zuri Walter, both at home; his parents of Middletown; two brothers, Odies Walter and Eric Walter, and two sisters, Kathy Walter and Gloria Walter, all of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush.
Services will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Irma B. Wheeler
Ret. Ward Clerk, 93

Irma B. Wheeler of Bloomingburg, a retired ward clerk for Horton Medical Center in Middletown and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, at the Montgomery Nursing Home in Montgomery. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Willis and Isabelle Kinney Crance, she was born January 18, 1909, in Middletown. She was the widow of William Wheeler.
Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the First Congregational Church in Middletown and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bullville Fire Company.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Clark of Bullville and Barbara LaForge and her husband, Edward, of Middletown; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Stanley A. and Barbara of Reading Center, Richard and Marie Smith of Middletown and William G. Smith of Bullville; a stepson, Dennis Wheeler and his wife, Patricia, of Hamptonburg; two brothers, Alton Crance of Yulan and Charles Crance and his wife, Donna, of Lake City, Mich.; two sisters, Lorraine Brown of Tucson, Ariz., and Emily Clark of Bullville; two sisters-in-law, Margery Crance of Middletown and Alda Crance of California; a former daughter-in-law, Cynthia Chandler Smith of Middletown; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert Smith; a sister, Vera Smith; two brothers, Warner and Lewis Crance; and a great-grandson, Ricky Davis.
Friends may call at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Alvis officiating.
Interment will be made in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Town of Wawayanda.

William W. Lunn
Truck Driver, 43

William W. Lunn of Gardiner, a truck driver for CCX Trucking Company in Montgomery and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, in Newburgh. He was 43 years of age.
The son of Eileen Gray Lunn and the late Donald Lunn, he was born April 11, 1959, in Bristol, Conn.
He is survived by his fiancée, Annmarie Finnegan, at home; his mother of Jeffersonville; a son, Tim Lunn; four daughters, Rachel, Tammy, Kara and Amy; two brothers, John Lunn of Meriden, Conn., and Mark Gray of Forestville, Calif.; three sisters, Catherine Lunn of Jeffersonville, Diane Dionne of Plymouth, Conn., and Rosemary Zgrodek of Modena; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Lunn who died in 1971.
Friends may call at the White and Venuto Funeral Home, 188 N. Plank Rd., Newburgh, on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Horst O. Baer, 77

Horst O. "Whitey" Baer of Jeffersonville died Sunday, December 22, 2002, at the Grover M. Hermann Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Callicoon. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Otto and Katie Baer, he was born May 5, 1915, in Germany.
Mr. Baer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two sons, William Baer and his wife, Linda, of Jeffersonville, and Everett Baer of Tempe, Tex.; his companion, Jean Sprague of Jeffersonville; and several grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Interment will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty at a later date.

Madeline F. Smith
Owned Kennels, 76

Madeline F. Smith, the owner of Montaire Kennels where she raised poodles, some of which went on to feature at Westminster, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Florence Thoby, she was born March 8, 1926, in Newburgh. She was the widow of William Norman Smith Sr.
In a family statement, it was said, "The family would like to thank the Orange and Sullivan County Hospice and the many caregivers that helped Madeline; a special thanks to Dr. David and his staff."
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and William Masker of Livingston Manor; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Michael and Melanie Smith of Walden and William Norman Jr. and Barbara Smith of Newburgh; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Thompson of New Windsor; a brother, Robert Thoby of the Town of Newburgh; an aunt and an uncle, Alice Thoby and Robert Thoby, both of Newburgh; many sisters and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Janice Smith.
Services were held Monday at the Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home in Newburgh.
Burial was made in Friends Cemetery in Plattekill.
