Walter Coddington
Ret. Truck Driver, 82

Walter "Pop Eye" Coddington of Liberty, a lifelong area resident and a retired truck driver for Queens Farms in Deposit and Sullivan County Oil in Liberty, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Baptist Health Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Scotia. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late John and Margaret Kearney Coddington, he was born July 7, 1919, in Liberty.
Mr. Coddington was a member and usher of St Peter's Roman Catholic Church of Liberty. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Russell D. Sprague Post #109 of the American Legion and the Clarence Hoyt Post No. 9217, Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Liberty. He had the distinction of driving three and one half million accident-free miles and received recognition from the Tractor Truck Driver Career Awards.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Repko Coddington, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Cynthia Fendsack of Schenectady; three grandchildren, Kelli, William and Brian Fendsack; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Brandon Winton; and a nephew, Michael Ackerly of Liberty. He was predeceased by a brother, John Coddington, and two sisters, Coldah Smollen and Madeline Ackerly.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter's Church on Saturday.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Pearl Keenan
Homemaker, 85

Pearl Keenan, a lifelong resident of Stony Point and a homemaker, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at home. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Irving and Grace Hastings Baisley, she was born January 8, 1917. She was the widow of Albert P. Keenan who died in 1973.
She is survived by two children, Gary D. Keenan and Cheryl Decker, both of Stony Point; three grandchildren, Gary Decker of Monroe, David Decker of Woodridge and Christina Clay of Gilbert, Ariz; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday.

Albert Stenson Sr.
Ret. Auto Mechanic, 84

Albert Stenson Sr. of Kissimmee, Fla., a former Sullivan County resident and a retired auto mechanic, died at his Florida home on Tuesday, June 18, 2002. He was 84 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Carrie Bush Stenson, he was born August 17, 1917, in Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Miller Stenson, at home; a son, Albert Stenson of Greenbelt, Md.; two daughters, Caroline Kurtz of Cochecton and Alice Littler of Rochester; and three grandchildren, Caryn Littler, and Kristin and Mark Stenson.
Services were held Saturday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake with the Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiating.
Burial was made in the East Cochecton Cemetery.

Amy M.L.W. Mullins
Ret. Supervisor, 71

Amy Marie Louise Wolff Mullins of Yulan, a retired supervisor for the New York Telephone Co. in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at her home. She was 71 years of age.
The daughter of the late Alfred and Helen Fuchs Wolff, she was born December 15, 1930, in Port Jervis. She was the widow of Francis Mullins
Mrs. Mullins was a former town councilman for the Town of Highland, a member of River Valley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Port Jervis; a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Yulan Fire Department; and a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Lackawaxen, Pa. She was also a former member of the Beaver Brook Rod and Gun Club.
She is survived by a son, Alfred Mullins of Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter, Helen York of Yulan and Ithaca; two sisters, Arlene Bennett of Yulan and Louise Wade of Houston, Tex; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Cremation will be made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Lena L. Conklin
Homemaker, 86

Lena L. Conklin of Ellenville, a homemaker, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Leonard and Willie Maude Johnson Hall, she was born January 21, 1916, in Pike County, Ala. She was the widow of Edward H. Conklin who died in 1990.
She is survived by a son, Edward D. Conklin of Cassadaga, Fla.; two daughters, Kathleen Smith of Kauneonga Lake and Laurie Merritts of Napanoch; three brothers, Ray Hall of Columbus, Ga., Charles Hall of Smith, Ala., and Wilson Hall of Union Springs, Ala.; four sisters, Lillian Fuller and Frances Cole, both of Columbus, Ga., Easter Hinson of Union Springs, Ala., and Bessie Mears of Orlando, Fla; seven grandchildren, Kelly Merritts of Ellenville, H. Lee Smith of Cleveland, N.Y., Christopher Smith of Middletown, Nicole Bailey of Loxahatchee, Fla., Clinton Conklin of Los Angeles, Calif., Bernadette Stephenson of Bloomingburg and Michele Rodriquez of Highland; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Michael W. Conklin; two brothers, Willie Hall and Quentin Hall; and three sisters, Stacia Johnson, Evon Tillery and Otis Rolling.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, on Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Burial will be made in Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Marion Kerry
Ret. Postal Wkr., 78

Marion Kerry of South Fallsburg, a retired postal worker, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Rosalie Paluszek Markoski, she was born October 2, 1923, in New York City. She was the widow of George Kerry.
Mrs. Kerry is survived by a son, Thomas Kerry of Lexington Park, Md.; a daughter, Rosanne Kerry of Somerville, Mass.; a sister, Pola Spiegel of the Bronx; a brother, Stanley Markoski of Port Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne with Fr. John Lynch officiating.
Interment was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

Maurice Hedderman Jr.
Former Conductor, 52

Maurice Jerome Hedderman Jr. of Wurtsboro, a former conductor for S.I. Rapid Transit and a 17-year area resident, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 52 years of age.
The son of Maurice Jerome and Dorothy Miller Hedderman Sr., he was born November 4, 1949, in New York City.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mr. Hedderman is survived by a son, Maurice Jerome Hedderman III, and a daughter, Kristine Frascati, both of Staten Island; a grandson, Joseph Frascati; three sisters, Susan Collicelli of Crofton, Md., Lorraine Mc Crane of Yankee Lake and Dorothy Pullo of Annapolis, Md.; two brothers, Michael Hedderman of Napanoch and Peter Hedderman of Spotsylvania, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was private.

Gustave T. Rantas
Ret. Bus Dispatcher, 81

Gustav T. Rantas of Barryville, a retired bus dispatcher for MABSTOA of New York City and a 23-year area resident, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Thomas and Theresa Varga Gougoutris, he was born July 31, 1920, in New York City. He was the widower of Doris F. Lehmann Rantas who died May 23, 1994.
A veteran of World War II, he served in Japan. Mr. Rantas was a member of the Shohola Fish and Game Club and a life member of the Yulan Fire Department.
In a family statement, it was said, "Our dad was a loving father and grandfather. He also had a great love for fishing and cooking that he shared with his family."
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Anne Myers of Ridgewood, N.J., Joan and William Lynch of Bradley Beach, N.J., and Doris and Michael Moore of Congers; a son, Charles Thomas Rantas and his wife, Leslie, of Fairfax, Va.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces; and seven nephews.
Cremation was made at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, Pa.

William Thelman Jr.
Ret. of NY Tel, 69

William H. Thelman Jr. of White Lake, a retired employee of the New York Telephone Company and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at his home. He was 69 years of age.
The son of the late William H. Sr. and Martha Pink Thelman, he was born November 15, 1932, in Pine Plains.
Mr. Thelman was a charter member of the Bethel Lions Club, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Monticello Elks Lodge No. 1544 and the Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Grace M. Thelman, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, William III and Laurie Thelman of Bethel; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia L. and Gary Shook of LaGrangeville; three granddaughters, Katie, Kellee and Kassie; several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Shirley Lee.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gene M. Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

John F. Paes, 59
Former VAW Employee

John F. Paes, an 18-year resident of Pinellas Park, Fla., a former resident of Napanoch and a former employee of VAW in Ellenville, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, in Clearwater, Fla. He was 59 years of age.
The son of Antonio Paes and the late Florence Geiselhart Paes, he was born November 6, 1942, in Yonkers.
He is survived by his wife, Helma Smith Paes, at home; his father of Ellenville; two sons, Dale Paes and Donald Paes, both of Napanoch; three brothers, Ronald Paes of Monticello, Tony Paes of Napanoch and Joseph Paes of Ellenville; three sisters, Donna Schoonmaker and Gail Countryman, both of Accord, and Linda Roosa of Wurtsboro; a grandson; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be held at the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville on Wednesday with the Rev. Jay Vogelaar officiating.

Helen C. DeVries
Homemaker, 91

Helen C. Tanis DeVries of Prospect Park, N.J., died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Oakland Care Center in New Jersey.
A longtime Prospect Park resident, she was born in Randolph, Wisc. She was the widow of Martin DeVries who died in 1994.
Mrs. DeVries was a former member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Paterson, N.J., and the Ladies Society of the church. She was a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff, N.J.
She is survived by three children, Lambert DeVries and Helen Catherine DeVries, both of Prospect Park, N.J., and Alida DeBoer and her husband, Marvin, of Minisink; four grandchildren, Laura Godegeburre, Leah Poveda and Susan Martin of the Minisink area, and Todd DeBoer of Atlanta, Ga.; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jeanette Teitsma of Corvallis, Oreg., Gertrude de waal of Malefyt of Wyckoff, N.J., and Jeanette Tolsma of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two brothers, Cornelius Tanis of Suffern and Richard Meyer of Lake Township, Mich.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Judith Auerbach
Homemaker, 78

Judith Genden Auerbach, a 50-year resident of Smallwood, died April 24, 2002 in Tucson, Arizona. She was 78 years of age.
Mrs. Auerbach was born in Fallsburg. The widow of Norman E. Auerbach, who died in 1993 after 51 years of marriage, she loved Smallwood and previously won the Women's Club Championship at the golf course in Smallwood, which her sons still own.
In a family statement, it was said, "Her family will forever cherish and remember her strength, kindness and love."
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Constance Auerbach, Gary and Christine Auerbach and Richard "Rick" and Julia Auerbach of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Jami and Randi and her husband, Ben, and their mother, Leslie, of Phoenix, Ariz., and David, Lauren, Michael and Aurora of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Madeline Elkin of Dragoon, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews; a grandnephew and a grandniece; and her companion and friend, Lulu Soto. She was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha and Fanny.
Services and burial were held in Arizona.

Rhoda Epstein, 64
Ret. Computer Spec.

Rhoda Epstein of Jeffersonville, a retired Sullivan County Community College Computer Support Specialist and longtime area resident, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at her home. She was 64 years of age.
The daughter of Betty Heller and the late Israel Heller, she was born May 24, 1938, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Epstein was a graduate of Queens College and had worked previously at American Airlines, the Sullivan County Department of Social Services and was a former registrar for Sullivan County Community College.
She was a charter member and past president of the Jeffersonville Public Library, a past president of the Western Sullivan Public Library and a past president and current trustee of the Ramapo Catskill Library System. She was also treasurer of Congregation Ahavath Sholom Synagogue in Jeffersonville and a board member and secretary of Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty.
She is survived by her husband of more than 33 years, Jacob J. Epstein of Jeffersonville; five children and their families, Russell and Susan Epstein and their daughter, Hannah, Cynthia Epstein, Aaron and Kim Epstein, Ilene and Michael Schlank, and Sheryl and Dan Gordon; her mother; and a sister and brother-in-law, Baila and Norman Mandel.
Services will be held at the Jeffersonville Synagogue at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Rakel B. Markao
Real Estate Bkr., 49

Rakel B. Markao of Callicoon, a real estate broker for The Barbanti Group in Liberty and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 49 years of age.
The daughter of Afridii B. Kevii and the late Frank Barrett, she was born July 26, 1952, in the Bronx.
Mrs. Markao was a member of Baithelion Temple in Cochecton and secretary for Helion Hall, Gheez Academy in Long Eddy (Rock Valley). She was also a member of the Association of Realtors.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother as well as a beautiful daughter."
She is survived by her husband, Samii Markao, at home; her mother of Cochecton; a son, Zekhai Markao of Endicott; three daughters, Rakel M. Markao of Jamaica, N.Y., Adara Markao of Endicott and Howara Markao of Callicoon; two brothers, Orshii Boldiis of Hankins and Khifodonis Boldiis of Binghamton; three sisters, Samida Johnson of Bradenton, Fla., Valiliida Niifa of New Haven, Conn., and Aseda Rabii of Cochecton; two grandchildren, Tariisa and Zoka Markao; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
