Robert Rutledge Sr.
Ret. Farmer, 75

Robert M. Rutledge Sr. of Tyler Hill, Pa., a beef farmer, a retired dairy farmer and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Vernon J. and J. Alice Brooks Rutledge, he was born September 6, 1926, in Galilee, Pa.
Mr. Rutledge is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Steinhauer Rutledge, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. Jr. and Sheri Rutledge of Tyler Hill, Pa., Randy and Chris Rutledge of Navarre, Fla., and Ryan and Bonnie Rutledge of Tyler Hill, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeffrey Rutledge of Navarre, Fla., and Sarah, Lauren, Chelsea, Benjamin and Joseph Rutledge of Tyler Hill, Pa.; two sisters, Lucille Erhardt of Hawley, Pa., and Betty Hopkins of Tyler Hill, Pa.; two brothers, Cecil Rutledge of Lake Ariel, Pa., and Melvin Rutledge of Pennington, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Angel Grace Rutledge and by six siblings, Laurita Niesen, Marion Rutledge, Leslie Rutledge, Arthur Rutledge, Evelyn Dennis and Grace Geist.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon with Virginia Hardy officiating.
Burial was made in the Hillside Cemetery in Damascus, Pa.

Rev. Robert M. Feist
Ret. Lutheran Minister, 80

The Rev. Robert M. Feist of Goshen, a retired Lutheran minister and former draftsman for S .S. White Dental Manufacturing in Staten Island, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at his home. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Otto D. and Barbara Kiefer Feist, he was born October 31, 1921, in Staten Island.
He was ordained in 1960 and served at many churches, including the First Lutheran Church in Jeffersonville and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liberty. While in Liberty, Rev. Feist served as chaplain for the Liberty Fire Department.
Rev. Feist is survived by his wife, Eileen Feist, at home; and a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Gregory Stienstra of Goshen.
Services were held Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Fairview Cemetery of Staten Island.

Homemaker, 73

Margaret E. Diamond of Wurtsboro and Florida, N.Y., died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. She was 73 years of age.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday at St. Joseph's Church in Florida, N.Y., with the Rev. Joseph Tokarcyk officiating.
Burial was made in Holy Name Cemetery in Otisville.

Grace G. Jagels
Ret. Secretary, 87

Grace G. Jagels of North Branch, a retired secretary for Doubleday Publishing Company in Garden City and a 30-year area resident, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harry and Matilda Jagels Garnar, she was born August 16, 1914, in Hollis. She was the widow of Clymer Hein and Howard Jagels.
Mrs. Jagels was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Hankins, the North Branch Fire Department Auxiliary, the Jeffersonville Senior Citizens, the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens in Callicoon, and the Callicoon Center Ruralettes.
She is survived by many friends and neighbors. A son, John Howard Jagels, predeceased her.
Services were held Tuesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with Keith Peters officiating.
Burial was made in Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Peter S. Nagy
Ret. Truck Driver, 57

Peter Stephen Nagy of Bullville, a retired driver for Yellow Freight, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 57 years of age.
The son of the late Peter and Barbara Kovacs Nagy, he was born December 28, 1944, in Jersey City, N.J.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a member of Teamsters #445 and #707 and a member of Christian Faith Fellowship Church in Middletown. He was a NASCAR fan, liked old cars and trucks and enjoyed collecting watches, watch fobs and hats. Mr. Nagy also liked working with his hands and enjoyed welding and carpentry.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Mackey Nagy, at home; his step-mother, Esther Nagy, and step-sister, and brother-in-law, Ellen and Fred Coppell, all of Little Rock, Ark.; a step-daughter and her husband, Mary Bunny and Bill Bradatech of Bullville; two aunts, Nancy Gunderdorf and Shirley Nagy, both of Paramus, N.J.; two granddaughters, Krystal and Breanna; and a grandson, Kyle.
Services were held Thursday at the Christian Faith Fellowship Church in Middletown with Pastor Joe McKelvey officiating.
Burial was made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery in Bloomingburg.

Alice Scully, 65
Ret. Home Health Aide

Alice "Wendy" Scully of Bloomingburg, a former home health aide in Rockland County for many years, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 65 years of age.
The daughter of the late Norman and Katherine Terill Strong, she was born January 11, 1937, in Alameda, Calif. She was the widow of John J. Scully.
She was a graduate of Suffern High School.
Mrs. Scully is survived by two sons, John J. Scully Jr. of White Plains and Edward J. Scully of New Jersey; a daughter, Susan Dloughy of Bloomingburg; and six grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the F.W. Loescher Veterans Cemetery in New Hempstead.

Lillian Gibson
Homemaker, 84

Lillian Gibson of Fallsburg, a homemaker, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Pittsburgh, Pa., after a short illness. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles and Anna Hauska, she was born December 1, 1917, in New York City. She was the widow of Reuben H. Gibson.
Mrs. Gibson was a member of the United Methodist Church of Woodridge.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and James McDermott of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Reuben and Mary Gibson of Fallsburg; four grandchidren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 Main St., Woodbourne, with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.

William Lowry
Ret. Reporter, 73

William Lowry of Walker Valley, a 30-year area resident and an investigating reporter and former bureau chief of the Sullivan County office of the Times-Herald Record, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, in Walker Valley. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Michael and Filomenia Smith Wick Lowry, he was born July 9, 1928, in Brooklyn. He was the widower of Ann Bell Lowry who died June 2, 1995.
Mr. Lowry was also an investigating reporter for The Record in Hackensack, N.J., part of the New Jersey Media Group, until his retirement. He had won several awards for his reporting. He had studied for the priesthood prior to enlisting in the United States Army.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret McHugh of California; several nephews and a niece; and a good friend, Barbara Goings.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Infant Saviour in Pine Bush with the Rev. Alfred Gallant officiating.
Burial will be made in the Walker Valley Cemetery.

Helen Morrell, 84
Ret. Businesswoman

Helen Morrell, the former owner and operator of Helen Morrell's Home of Fashion in Masten Lake since 1943, died at her home on Monday, May 27, 2002. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of the late Samuel and Regina "Jenny" Stern Appel, she was born January 22, 1918, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Leo Morrell who died in 1980.
Mrs. Morrell was a life member of Hadassah and the South Fallsburg Synagogue.
In a family statement, it was said, "Above all she was a loving mother and grandmother with unlimited capacities for giving. She was very affectionate, openly showing her love for family as well as friends. She had an eye for beauty, a love for nature and a passion for learning. She was an extraordinary businesswoman, who started with nothing. She built a solid business, a beautiful home and shared both with the ones she loved. We'll miss her very much."
She is survived by a daughter, who was also her business partner, Patricia Tunick Morrell of Masten Lake, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Shelley Morrell of Sayreville, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, RoseLee Morrell of Edgewater, N.J.; a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Nathan Chait of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Spencer, Stephanie, Jonathan, Eric, Jamie and Jennifer; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Morrell.
Services were held Thursday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello with Rabbi Isaac Gottlieb officiating.
Burial was made in King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, N.J.

Hazel Komonchak
Retired Teacher, 93

Hazel Meehan Komonchak of Bloomingburg, a former Rockland County resident and retired teacher, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at her home. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Robert and Stella Partridge Meehan, she was born August 23, 1908, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Joseph B. Komonchak who died in 1975.
She graduated from Congers Union High School in 1926 and, after earning a New York State Teachers Training Class license, taught at St. Agatha's Home for Children in Nanuet.
Mrs. Komonchak was a founding member of the Young Women's Democratic Club of Rockland County, was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the West Nyack Volunteer Fire Company and Blessed Mother's Sodality of St. Anthony's Church in Nanuet and a former chairman of the New City and Nanuet March of Dimes. After the death of her husband, she moved to Bloomingburg and was a member of the Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.
She is survived by a sister, Rita Meehan Steffens of Hillcrest; nine daughters and two sons, Bernadette Komonchak of Durham, N.H., Patricia Codello and her husband, Michael, of Nyack, Irene Rossi and her husband, Stephen Rossi of Suffern, Rev. Joseph A. Komonchak of College Park, Md., Maryann Carroll and her husband, James of Spencerport, Alice Hearn and her husband, Brent of Winter Haven, Fla., Andrew R. Komonchak of Bloomingburg, Ann Coriano and her husband, Victor, of Denver, Colo., Roberta Stanton and her husband, Chris, of Katonah, Virginia Forni and her husband, John, of Bloomingburg, and Joan Sampedro and her husband, Eric, of Hackensack, N.J.; 52 grandchildren; and 59 great-grandchildren She was predeceased by a son, James, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Estelle O'Brien, who died in 1977.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church in Nanuet followed by burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery.

Edward Irmscher, 66

Edward F. "Butch" Irmscher of Hortonville, a retired heavy equipment operator and greaser for Operating Engineers Local No. 825 in Newburgh and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 66 years of age.
The son of the late Edward and Margaret Noack Irmscher, he was born June 26, 1935.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 825 in Newburgh.
He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Weiss of Sarasota, Fla., and Irene Molusky of Naples, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hortonville Cemetery in Hortonville.

Christopher Sugrim

Christopher Anil Sugrim of Forest Hills, a bartender and former Jeffersonville resident, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Grover M. Hermann Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Callicoon from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 23 years of age.
The son of Jerry and Janice Lachman Sugrim, he was born January 17, 1979, in Georgetown, Guyana.
A 1996 graduate of Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School, he was an avid martial artist.
He is survived by his parents of North Branch; his paternal grandmother, Indranie Baichoo of Vancouver, B .C.; his maternal grandmother, Phuldai Lachman of North Branch; two brothers, Robert Sugrim of New York City, and Brian Sugrim and his wife, Bernadette, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Sherry Sugrim of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ruth E. Dennis, 89
Ret. Businesswoman

Ruth Elizabeth Dennis of Beach Lake, Pa., a homemaker, the former owner and operator of Dennis Cottages in Beach Lake, Pa., and a lifelong area resident, died at her home on Saturday, May 25, 2002, after an illness. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late William J. and Charlotte Keyes Davey, she was born August 29, 1912, in Beach Lake. She was the widow of Thomas S. Dennis who died September 9, 1979.
A 1929 graduate of Beach Lake High School, she was a 53-year member of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church, served on many church committees and was a past president of the United Methodist Women of the church. She was a founding member of the Beach Lake Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Tusten Senior Citizens in Narrowsburg and the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens in Callicoon. She was an avid card player. Mrs. Dennis was a clerk for many years for her grand-uncle, Hiram Wood, a local auctioneer, and had worked as a waitress at the Central House in Beach Lake and Sadie's Restaurant in Honesdale. She had also served many years on the Board of Elections for Berlin Township as a clerk and a judge.
Mrs. Dennis bowled for many years in Honesdale and Hawley, Pa., and had spent many happy hours deer hunting at the Beach Lake Hunting and Fishing Club as a guest of her uncle, Mr. Wood. She also enjoyed traveling with family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth C. Dennis of Beach Lake, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Nancy Freiermuth of Virginia; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis and Terry Freiermuth, Donna and James Piscitelli, Tina Brumm, Teresa and Larry Selman, Robin Williams, Cindy and Mark Neil, Georgette Freiermuth, Robert and Lisa Freiermuth, James and Crystal Freiermuth; 16 great-grandchildren, Christy, Randy, John, James, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Leah, Carrie, Melissa, Stephanie, Dallas, Travis, Robert Jr., Courtney, James Jr., and Zackary; and two great-great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Heather; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Nancy Freiermuth Smith and Randy Freiermuth.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weightman officiating.
Interment will be made in the Beach Lake Cemetery in Beach Lake, Pa..

Anna Kronwitt
Homemaker, 77

Anna Kronwitt of Bloomingburg, a homemaker and a 28-year area resident, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her home. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Sophie Kurdzos, she was born January 14, 1925. She was the widow of Walter Kronwitt.
In a family statement, it was said, "Her grandchildren meant everything in the world to her. They were the joy of her life and she loved her time with them."
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Georgette and Jeff Wilson of Pine Bush; two sons, Louis and John Kronwitt, both of Manhattan; two sisters, Stella Kurdzos and Helen Yurak; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew. She was predeceased by a son, Walter Kronwitt Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church with Fr. Raymond Bagdonis, O. Carm., officiating.
Burial was made in the family plot in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.

Alice M. Fink, 95
Ret. Nurse's Aide

Alice M. Fink of Johnson, a retired nurse's aide and former longtime area resident, formerly of Monticello, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at St. Joseph's Place in Port Jervis. She was 95 years of age.
Born April 4, 1907, in Newfoundland, Canada, she was the widow of Alan John Wells who died in 1957 and Edward I. Fink who died in 1986.
Mrs. Fink was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello and when Kiamesha Chapter of Monticello folded, she transferred her membership to the Liberty Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, Loretta M. Wells of Johnson; five grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, John Alan Wells, and a daughter, Eileen Ruth Best.
Services were held Saturday at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating.
Burial was made in the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

Beverly Benjou
Deputy Sheriff, 53

Beverly A. Benjou of Monroe, a deputy sheriff for the Orange County Sheriff's Department in Goshen and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. She was 53 years of age.
The daughter of the late Clyde and Myrtle M. Harty Nye, she was born May 20, 1940, in Suffern.
She is survived by her husband, Lambro "Lannie" Benjou, at home; a son, Constantine Benjou of Charlotte, N.C .; a daughter, Traci Boss of Suffern; two brothers, Ernest R. Lewis Jr. of South Fallsburg and Richard Lewis of Swan Lake; three sisters, Gladys Davis of Moyock, N.C., Martha Kozachenko of Florida, N.Y., and Diane Castolina of Chester; a granddaughter, Devona N. Boss; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department will hold special services at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Juan Smith Sr. of Newburgh, a custodian for the Monticello School District and a recent area resident, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, He was 49 years of age.
The son of James Smith Sr. and the late Ernestine Cooke Smith, he was born October 30, 1952, in Brooklyn.
He is survived by his father; his wife, Frances Smith; three sons, Juan Smith Jr., Jeffrey Smith and Anton Smith, all of Brooklyn; six brothers, James Smith Jr. of Buffalo, Jerond Smith and Joel Smith, both of Brooklyn, Jonathan Smith of Charlotte, N.C., Jamie Smith of Brooklyn and Terry Smith of Monticello; five sisters, Deborah Smith, Donna Johnson, and Daria Smith, all of Brooklyn, Denine Smith of the Bronx and Kimley Smith of Brooklyn; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Jules Smith, and a grand-niece, Shalese Gayle.

Vivian R. Space of Goshen, a retired corrections officer with 20 years service at the Orange County Jail in Goshen and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Leon B. and Agnes Paddock Ramage, she was born August 23, 1922, in Florida, N.Y.
She was a member of the Goshen United Methodist Church.
In a family statement, it was said, "Vivie was a real people person. She loved to socialize, travel and play Bingo. She had many friends and was loved by all."
Mrs. Space is survived by her husband, Richard S. Space, at home; four children and their spouses, Susan and Robert Kruger of the Town of Mt. Hope, Richard W. and Toby Lee Space of Middletown, Beatrice and Gregory Spolverino of Bloomingburg and Sam R. Space and his companion, Jennifer Holmes of Boston, Mass.; three grandsons, Dax and Linda Kruger, Robert and Emma Kruger and Matthew Margenau and Tatiana; two sisters, Beatrice R. Gawrys of Middletown and June Pape of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Gilmore and Marjorie Kardys; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald VanDyke Sr. of Middletown, a retired employee of the City of Middletown Department of Public Works and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late William and Harriet Baltimore VanDyke, he was born June 6, 1928, in Goshen.
Mr. VanDyke was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor VanDyke, at home; thirteen children, Angela and her husband, James Watson of Monticello, Phyllis VanDyke, Geraldine VanDyke, Rose Marie VanDyke and Denise Cooper, all of Middletown, Yolanda VanDyke of Napanoch, Margaret Ann VanDyke of Kingston, Gerald VanDyke Jr., Aaron and Carol VanDyke, Alan VanDyke, Barry VanDyke and Wayne Perry Hunter, all of Middletown, Eric Van Dyke of Ellenville, and Thomas and his wife, Michele VanDyke of Cuddebackville; two sisters, Helen VanDyke and Dorothy VanDyke, both of Middletown; 38 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ret. Claims Adj., 82

Florence L. Ryan, a 42-year resident of Hunter Lake, Parksville, and a retired claims adjuster for the New York Life Insurance Co. in New York City, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home after a long illness. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter of the late Henry and Emma McSweeney Lee, she was born January 15, 1920, in New York City. She was the widow of William Ryan who died in January of 2000.
Mrs. Ryan was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church and Court Mary Anthony, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, both in Liberty, and a member of the Community General Hospital Auxiliary in Harris.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John J. and Charlene Ryan of Hunter Lake, and William G. and Irene Ryan of Nanuet; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Robert Flynn of Roscoe; a sister, Anne O'Shea of Nanuet; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter's R.C . Church in Liberty Wednesday with Msgr. Edward Straub officiating.
Burial was made in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Francesco Satiro
Chef, 30

Francesco Satiro of Highland Lake, a chef for Carini Pizza in Narrowsburg, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at his home. He was 30 years of age.
The son of Salvatore Satiro and the late Vita Monteleone Satiro, he was born October 28, 1971, in Carini, Italy.
He is survived by his father in Italy; a daughter, Andrea Satiro; a sister, Angela Poma; and a nephew, John Poma.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville with the Rev. Evan Greco officiating.
Burial will be made in Italy.
