Emma Gyger
Homemaker, 95

Emma Gyger of Jeffersonville, a homemaker, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Cochecton. She was 95 years of age.
The daughter of the late Jakob and Elise Reichenbach Brandt, she was born December 23, 1906, in Gsteig, Switzerland.
Mrs. Gyger was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Jeffersonville.
She is survived by her husband, Jakob Gyger, at home; a son, Wilhelm Gyger of Switzerland; a daughter, Emmy DeFinis of Cochecton; a sister, Katharina Niederer, a brother, Jakob Brandt, a special niece, Veronica Niederer and several other nieces and nephews, all of Switzerland; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with Pastor Kristen Anderson officiating.
Burial was made in the Jeffersonville Lutheran Cemetery in Jeffersonville.

Ida McIntosh
Homemaker, 74

Ida McIntosh of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifetime area resident, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 74 years of age.
The daughter of Frederick and Edith Mosher Wells, she was born May 5, 1927, in Rockrift. She was the widow of Dwight McIntosh who died in 1994.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dwight and Margaret McIntosh of Liberty, Harry and Glenda McIntosh of Grahamsville, Lenny and Julie McIntosh of Hurleyville and Timothy and Maryann McIntosh of Neversink; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and William Hannold of Liberty; a sister, Evangaline Ackerson of Tennessee; an uncle, Milton Wells of Middletown; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty.
Burial will be made in the Hurleyville Cemetery in Hurleyville

Alfred Pingel
Ret. Butcher, 94

Alfred Pingel of Beach Lake, Pa., a retired butcher and farmer and a 77-year area resident, died Monday April 29, 2002, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 94 years of age.
The son of the late Johann Frederich and Anna Sophia Pingel, he was born September 16, 1907, in Stotel, Germany.
Mr. Pingel was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion. He and his brother, the late Henry Pingel, operated a very successful butcher shop on their farm in Pennsylvania, just across the river from Narrowsburg.
He is survived by a brother, Herman Pingel of Littleton, Colo.; and four nephews and their families, Fred Pingel of Beach Lake, Pa., Richard Pingel of Littleton, Colo., Arthur Pingel of Warwick and Robert Pingel of Chicago, Ill. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.

John Naveria
Worker, 69

John Naveria, a 12-year resident of Monticello Manor and a longtime area resident, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at his home after a brief illness. He was 69 years of age.
He was born October 31, 1932, in Puerto Rico. He had lived and worked in Sullivan County.
He is survived by many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Burial was made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery in Bloomingburg.

Walter Oradesky
Chef, 68

Walter "Walt the Cook" Ora-desky, a chef and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at his home, following a brief illness. He was 68 years of age.
He was born November 8, 1933, in Jersey City, N.J.
A Korean War veteran, Mr. Oradesky was a chef in many of the local hotels and camps, including Monticello Manor and Happy Daze Hunting Camp.
Services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Blanche M. Branning
Homemaker, 83

Blanche M. Branning of Monticello, a lifelong area resident, died at her home on Tuesday, April 30, 2002. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Horace M. and Florence E. Richards Merritt, she was born January 1, 1919, in Woodbourne. She was the widow of the late Richard Branning who died November 16, 2002.
Mrs. Branning is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dennis Diuguid of Monticello; a sister, Luella Benton of New Windsor; three grandchildren, Todd Diuguid and his wife, Kelly, of Culloden, W.Va., Allison Diuguid of Monticello and Samantha Nieves and her husband, Richard, of Norwich, Conn.; and a great-grandson, Jordan Diuguid of Norwich, Conn.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello, on Friday from 11 a.m. until noon.
Services will be held at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Alex McLean officiating.
Interment will be made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Robert V. Saberg
Retired Chef, 68

Robert Vincent Saberg of Highland Falls, a retired chef at the Thayer Hotel in West Point and a 40-year area resident, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh, after a long illness. He was 68 years of age.
The son of the late Selmer and Claire Faber Saberg, he was born May 10, 1933, in Staten Island.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he attended the Culinary Institute in New York and served his apprenticeship at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
A longtime Orange, Rockland and Sullivan County resident, he worked at various resorts and hotels including Grossinger's in Liberty, Bear Mountain Inn, The Holiday Inn in Orangeburg, and Hotel Thayer in West Point.
In a family statement, it was said, "His love of cooking was always present in his mastership of the craft which will be greatly missed by family and friends. He greatly enjoyed music, flower and vegetable gardening in addition to watching cooking shows and trying out new recipes."
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Sabert of Highland Falls; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Robert and Pixie Saberg of Livingston Manor; two daughters, Cheryl L. and Milford Boyles of Monticello, and Wendy R. and Allen Zollo of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Frederick Saberg of Herndon, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Robin Michelle Saberg who died in 1979.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main St., Highland Falls, with the Rev. Judy Ferguson officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

Penelope G. Beakes
Ret. Teacher, 80

Penelope G. Beakes of Middletown and Wurtsboro, a retired teacher of the Middletown School District and a longtime area resident, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at St. Teresa's Nursing Home in Middletown. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harry and Penelope Rogers Gass, she was born March 2, 1922, in Middletown. She was the widow of Donald Beakes.
Mrs. Beakes is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and James Arnott Jr. of Wurtsboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Stacy and Carol Beakes of Englewood, Colo.; four grandchildren, James III, Meghan, Spencer and John; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.

Jean J. Bogan
Homemaker, 90

Jean J. Bogan of Ormond Beach, Fla., a homemaker and former longtime Liberty resident, died suddenly on Monday, April 29, 2002, at the Ormond Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, Fla. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Petronella Komincz Roman, she was born August 11, 1911, in Carbondale, Pa.
She was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty.
Mrs. Bogan is survived by a son, John Bogan of Liberty; a daughter and son-in-law, Maryann and Frank Kelsey of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a sister, Pauline Huddy of Mays Landing, N.J.; four grandchildren, Todd Kelsey, Wendy Kelsey, Gregory Williams and Jean Marie Williams; a great-grandchild, Ashley Williams; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Wiliams, a brother and several sisters.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday at St. Peter's Church, 264 N. Main St., Liberty, with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Ralph M. Brauser, 82
Ret. Painter/Carpenter

Ralph Martin Brauser of Beach Lake, Pa., a retired painter and carpenter and an assistant pharmacist at the former Seibert's Pharmacy and the former Keenan's Pharmacy, both in Narrowsurg, and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Herman A. and Anna Aeppli Brauser, he was born November 12, 1919, in East Berlin, Pa. He was the widower of Dorothy Marie Kleffmann who died in 1988.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a corporal with the 20th Amphibious Combat Engineers, making three invasions — Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He was in sixteen countries and earned eight battle stars with 30 months of combat time. He had a presidential citation and received three arrowheads for initial wave as a member of a combat invasion troop.
Mr. Brauser was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Chruch in Narrowsburg and served there as an usher for more than 37 years. He was also a 50-year member of the Narrowsburg Fire Department.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Teresa Brauser of Windsor, Colo., and Michael and Karen Brauser of Beach Lake, Pa.; a sister, Evelyn Umlauf of Lititz, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes and Rev. Donald Beck officiating.
Burial was made in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Shubo Tim Tu
Ret. Res. Advisor, 78

Shubo Tim Tu of Long Eddy, a retired residential advisor for the Delaware Valley Job Corps in Callicoon and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 78 years of age.
The son of Viola White Unto and the late Monticello Unto, he was born March 16, 1924, in New York City.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vidii Kai Kii Tu, at home; his mother; a son; five daughters; a sister; 10 grandchidren; 10 great-grandchidren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Bruce Boden
Ret. Electrician, 74

Bruce Boden of Woodbourne, a retired electrician and the proprietor of Chatham Electric in New Jersey, and Boden Enterprises, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Stanley and Irene Glover Boden, he was born March 2, 1928, in Canada.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. A general contractor, Mr. Boden was also a real estate agent and a gunsmith. He was a volunteer for the Ilion Fire Company in Ilion and a past president of the Chatham Lions club.
Mr. Boden is survived by two sons, Timothy Boden and his wife, Rita, and Bruce Boden, all of New Jersey; a daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Tim McCoy of the state of Florida; two sisters, Bernice Kern and Barbara Dudrow, both of the state of Florida; and nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Jennifer, Kevin, Kristin, Daniel, Evan, Ryan, Summer and Mary.
Funeral services were held Thursday evening at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Burial of the cremains will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty at a later date.

Lafayette Edwards, 69
Ret. Evergreen Gatherer

Lafayette "Junie" Edwards of Parksville, a retired self-employed evergreen gatherer and woodsman and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at his home. He was 69 years of age.
The son of the late Vernon L. and Anna Conklin Edwards, he was born July 26, 1932, in Parksville.
In a family statement, it was said, "A man in the forest sees many trees; a man in heaven sees a world of trees with a helping hand stretching from heaven to earth. This man sows the seed of love for all who cared and those he left behind. In loving memory of a loving husband, father and grandfather."
He is survived by his wife, Hilda "Sissy" Edwards, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Pat Edwards of Livingston Manor and Jimmy and Sonia Edwards of Parksville; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Beverly and Thomas Mahinda of Port Charlotte, Fla., Phyllis and Ronald Bury of Roscoe, Barbara and Doug Leight of Hurleyville, Sally Edwards of Livingston Manor and Mary and Doug Edwards of Parksville; two brothers, Richard Edwards and Elmer Edwards, both of Parksville; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Raymond Edwards, and four brothers, Leslie, Reginald, Kenneth and Aquila Edwards.
Friends may call at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. H. Markham Fargo officiating.
Cremation will be private at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Sophia D. Bennett
Homemaker, 82

Sophia D. Bennett of Sayville, L.I., died on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Sayville. She was 82 years of age.
The widow of William Bennett, who died in 1970, she was born in Queens, and had lived in Sayville since 1985.
Mrs. Bennett was a member and past matron of Harmony Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, in Queens, and held a dual membership in Metlakhapla Chapter in Sayville, where she had served as secretary at one time. She was also a Past District Deputy Grand Matron of the Queens District, OES.
She is survived by two daughters, Marjorie B. Ahern of Sayville and Barbara B. Kayton and her husband, Jim, of Fremont Center; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Henry.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville, followed by burial in Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn.

George F. Bernas
Ret. Farmer, 87

George F. Bernas of Cochecton, a retired farmer and butcher and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Bartak Bernas, he was born April 23, 1915, in Cliffside, N.J. He was the widower of Helen Daub Bernas who died in 1994.
Mr. Bernas was a member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
Friends may call at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Thomas Jones officiating.

Kenneth Hayes Sr.
Ret. Auditor, 74

Kenneth G. Hayes Sr. of Middletown, retired from the Monticello Raceway, a retired head auditor of the Middletown Savings Bank, and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Cornelius and Magdalina Kopeski Hayes, he was born June 30, 1927, in Wallkill. He was the widower of Lois Terwilliger Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a World War II veteran of the United States Air Force and an honorary life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Orange County Chapter 140. He was also a member and financial officer of the American Legion Post No. 151 in Middletown; a member of BPOE Lodge No. 1097 in Middletown, a member of the City of Middletown Zoning Board; and a past member of the Middletown Lions Club and the Mulberry House Senior Center.
He is survived by seven children, Kenneth Hayes Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Menlo Park, Calif., Pamela Hayes of Middletown, Paul Hayes of Otisville, Toni D. Hayes of Middletown, Lois-Ann Hayes of Howells, Lisa M. Hayes of Johnson, Michael Hayes of Middletown, and a daughter-in-law, Andrea Hayes; four grandchildren, Alexis, Allison, Thomas and Alexander Hayes; a niece and her husband, Betty and Phil DeLessio of Montgomery; two nephews, Donald Broad of Middletown and Orin Broad of Pine Bush; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Cornelius, Raymond and Daniel Hayes, and two sisters, Eleanor and Mary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Cottage Street, Middletown.
Burial will be made in the new Prospect Cemetery in Pine Bush.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mulberry House Senior Center, the Stony Ford Foundation or to American Legion Post No. 151.

Randolph Peters
Ret. Farmer, 89

Randolph E. Peters of Briscoe, a retired farmer and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at his home. He was 89 years of age.
The son of the late Francis and Elizabeth Story Peters, he was born July 29, 1912, in Briscoe.
He is survived by five nephews; two nieces; and many good friends and neighbors.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Robert McLeod officiating.
Burial will be made in the Catskill Rural Cemetery in Catskill.
