Marianna Oates
Homemaker, 80

Marianna "Nanny" Oates of Bloomingburg, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Alva and Nora Tripp Comfort, she was born January 18, 1922, in Bloomingburg.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be sadly missed and always in our hearts."
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul M. Oates Sr., at home; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul Oates Jr., Roy and Terry Oates, William Sr. and Cynthia Oates, all of Bloomingburg, and Joseph Oates of Middletown; eight grandchildren, Theresa, Paula, Carol, Billie Marie, Tammy, Willy, Kenny and Jeanie; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Shirley Gillen of Fair Oaks; two great-stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Gerald and Albert Comfort.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro with the Rev. Betty Beach officiating.
Burial will be made in Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery in Bloomingburg.

Sadie Berger
Homemaker, 99

Sadie Berger of Monticello, a homemaker, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002. She was 99 years of age.
She was the widow of A. Louis Berger.
Mrs. Berger is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gilda and Milton Feldman; a sister, Helen Vogel; a nephew, Irwin Pfeffer; a very good friend, Diane Anderson; three grandchildren, Andrew, Joel and Marcy and four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Adam, Casey and Brett.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday at the Riverside Cemetery in New Jersey.

Agnes M. Milano
Homemaker, 65

Agnes Milano of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died at her home after a long illness on Tuesday, February 12, 2002. She was 65 years of age.
The daughter of the late Leo and Verna Moith Milano, she was born May 18, 1936, in Poughkeepsie.
Ms. Milano was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Debbie Bacco of Liberty; a daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Mark Spina of Liberty; a brother, John Milano of Liberty; a sister, Margaret Baldino of Connecticut; a grandson, Julian Spina; and a lifelong friend, Joan Deppa of Parksville.
Services were held Thursday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

George Shoemaker
Ret. Engineer, 55

George W. Shoemaker, a five-year resident of Lisbon, N.Y., died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at his home. He was 55 years of age.
The son of Florence Decker Shoemaker and the late John Albert Shoemaker, he was born December 20, 1946, in Middletown.
A graduate of Middletown High School, he was employed as an engineer at New York University Medical Center until his retirement in 1997. He also worked as a police sergeant for 10 years for the Town of Mount Hope. He enjoyed hunting and boating.
Mr. Shoemaker was a member and past first assistant chief of the Howells Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Barbara A. Vorees, at home; his mother of Howells; four children, Daniel G. and his wife, Caren Shoemaker of Westbrookville, and John G. Shoemaker, Georgianna Shoemaker, and Annalee and her husband, Colley Bender, all of Middletown; two grandchildren, Joseph M. and Nikolas D. Shoemaker, both of Westbrookville; two brothers, John Shoemaker of Lisbon and Ronald Shoemaker of Cornwall; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial was private.
A memorial service will held at a later date at Morely Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Eric Smith presiding.

John Thompson, 61

John Thompson of Monticello, a former employee of Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello, died Monday, February 11, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 61 years of age.
He was born January 30, 1941.
Mr. Thompson is survived by numerous friends in the recovering community.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

Franklyn J. Smith
Welldriller, 71

Franklyn J. Smith of Cochecton, the owner of Frank Smith Well Drilling, died Monday, February 11, 2002, at his home. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Albert M. and Frances Smith, he was born May 4, 1930. He was the widower of Marie Kiegler Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of the New York State Waterworks Association.
He is survived by a son-in-law, Tim Dobell of Cochecton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Andrew P. and Linda Smith of Cochecton, Franklyn R. and and his companion, Patricia Collins, of Rochester, and Matthew H. and Dena Smith, all of Cochecton; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Douglas and Megan Smith, and Heather and Adam Dobell; a great-grandchild, Evan Smith; a brother, Charles Smith of Cochecton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with the Rev. Robert Nee officiating.
Burial was made in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Virginia M. Mahoney

Virginia M. Mahoney of Newburgh, a production line foreman for Catania Brothers in Newburgh and a 35-year area resident, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at her home. She was 70 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Margaret Nolan O'Neill, she was born May 21, 1931, in the Bronx.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Mahoney of Newburgh; four children, Thelma Burton and James Mahoney and his wife, Nella, all of Newburgh, Margaret and her husband, Scott Gurkand, of Wurtsboro, and Linda and her husband, Kevin Larsen, of New Windsor; and four grandchildren, Robert and Daniel Mahoney and Virginia and Jennifer Burton, all of Newburgh.
Funeral services were private.

Paul J. Valentino

Paul J. Valentino of Bloomingburg, a retired building inspector in New York City and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at the Middletown Park Manor. He was 89 years of age.
The son of the late Vincenzo and Elisa Valentino, he was born April 14, 1912, in Brooklyn. He was the widower of Nancy Cascio Valentino who died in 1993.
Mr. Valentino was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Bloomingburg. He was also a fire and building inspector for the Town of Mamakating.
He is survived by two daughters, Dolores Danise of Bloomingburg and Adrienne Amundsen of Commack, L.I.; a sister, Francine Tursi of Brooklyn; two grandsons, Christopher and John; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Macaluso.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Bloomingburg with the Rev. James Sidoti, O. Carm., officiating.
Burial was made in Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.

Rex Walter, 69
Ret. Corrections Offc.

Rex Walter of Wawarsing, a retired correctional officer at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility in Napanoch and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at the Ellenville Regional Hospital. He was 69 years of age.
The son of the late Earl and Geraldine Carr Walter, he was born March 15, 1932, in Phoenicia.
Mr. Walter was a member of the Napanoch Fire Company, the Ellenville Elks Lodge #1971 and Wawarsing Lodge #582, Free and Accepted Masons.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Walter is survived by his wife, Debra Hofsommer Walter, of Mongaup Valley; a stepdaughter, Shawna Kelly of Westport, Conn.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Loucks Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.
Cremation will be private with burial of the cremains at a later date.

William Wosneski
Co-owner Bar/Grill, 88

William Wosneski of Chula Vista, Calif., the co-owner of the Florida Hotel Bar & Grill for over 25 years and a resident of Pine Island and Florida (N.Y.) for most of his life, died Saturday, January 19, 2002, in Chula Vista, Calif. He was 88 years of age.
The son of the late Stanley and Sophie Wosneski, he was born August 5, 1913, in Passaic, N.J. He was the widower of Eva Wosneski.
A proud World War II veteran, he served as a medic. He loved to fly airplanes and enjoyed parachuting, hunting and fishing. He adored his dogs, Whitey and Willie.
Mr. Wosneski was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a wonderful dancer and [had] a laugh that will stay in my heart forever. He was my noon, my midnight, my talk, my song. I thought love would last forever; I was wrong. I'll never forget you, Pop."
He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and John Warren of Rome, N.Y., Patricia and Dennis McGinnis of Rock Hill, Barbara and Paul Billeci of Johnston and Judith and Michael Cooper of Middletown; 11 grandchildren, Christopher, Suzanne, Rebecca, Danny, Tim, Jessica, Eva, Michael, Sara, Bonnie and Bill; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Wosneski of Chicago, Ill., Edward Wosneski of the state of Florida, and Henry Wosneski of Pine Island; and two sisters, Helen of the state of Florida and Stella of New Jersey. He was predeceased by a brother, Chester.
Cremation was made in California followed by burial in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in California.

Patricia A. Briskhe
Payroll Clerk, 57

Patricia A. "Penny" Briskhe, a one-year resident of Dayton, Tex., and a 4 1/2-year payroll clerk for SYSCO in Houston, Tex., died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, Tex. She was 57 years of age.
The daughter of Richard Knutsen Sr. and the late Mary Bobiak Knutsen, she was born July 17, 1944, in Brooklyn.
She enjoyed gardening, reading and collecting carousel horses.
Mrs. Briskhe is survived by her husband, Ernie Briskhe of Dayton, Tex.; a daughter, Tara Sheeler of San Antonio, Tex.; her father of Wurtsboro; her brother, Richard Knutsen Jr. of Wappingers Falls; her mother-in-law, Hanna Briskhe of Middletown; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Ernest Briskhe.
Services and burial were held in Texas.

Aaron Stollman
Ret. Businessman, 92

Aaron Stollman of Aventura, Fla., a retired co-owner of Stollman Fish Company in Monticello and a former South Fallsburg resident, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at the Aventura Hospital in Aventura, Fla. He was 92 years of age.
The son of the late Naomi and David Stollman, he was born November 25, 1909.
He is survived by his wife, Toby Stollman of Aventura, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Linda Stollman of South Fallsburg; a daughter, Wilma Moritt of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Dawn Stollman and Rachel Stollman, both of Hamden, Conn., Rebecca Stollman of Binghamton, David Stollman of Wilmington, Del., Melissa and her husband, Anthony Bastone, of Monticello, Brad and his wife, Theresa Moritt of Washingtonville, and Rolene Moritt of Orlando, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Fallon Ashley Bastone, Chad Moritt and Valerie Moritt.
Services were held February 6 at the Levitt-Weinstein Funeral Home in Hollywood, Fla.
Burial was made in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hollywood, Fla.

Jaclyn M. Weireter

Jaclyn M. Weireter of Highland Mills, a student at Orange County Community College in Middletown and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, February 11, 2002, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. She was 18 years of age.
The daughter of Paul J. and Karen Katta Weireter, she was born June 2, 1983, in Nyack.
Miss Weireter was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Highland Mills and an employee of Nautica at Woodbury Commons in Central Valley. She was a 2001 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
She is survived by her parents of Highland Mills; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Kristen and Mike Ullmeyer of Bronxville, Noelle and Christian Rausch of Rock Hill, Gretchen and John Chandra of Harriman, and Victoria Weireter and Alexandra Weireter, both of Highland Mills; her maternal grandmother, Amelia Katta of Highland Mills; her paternal grandparents, Paul and Rose Weireter of Garnerville; a nephew, Joshua Chandra of Harriman; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, 26 Hunter St., Highland Mills, with the Rev. Gerard P. Travers officiating.
Burial will be made in the Cemetery of the Highland in Highland Mills.

James Calabro

James Calabro of Kerhonkson, a lumber grader for Schwab Lumber in Kerhonkson, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at his home. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late Jack and Nancy Waite Calabro, he was born February 3, 1926, in Pawlet, Vt. He was the widower of Jeannette Stone Calabro who died in 1997.
He is survived by his companion, Marion Hannan of Kerhonkson; two daughters, Barbara Waite of Kerhonkson and Patricia Waite of Monticello; four sons, James Waite of Wawarsing, Clifford Waite of Hurleyville, Larry Waite of Kerhonkson and Raymond Calabro of Pownal, Vt.; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several cousins in Vermont. He was predeceased by a grandchild.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the H.B. Humiston Funeral Home, 30 Forty Second St., Kerhonkson, with the Rev. Arlene Dawber officiating.
Burial will be made in the Pine Bush Cemetery.

Edward J. Wehner

Edward J. Wehner of Shandelee, a retired carpenter and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph and Carrie Hauschild Wehner, he was born May 22, 1930, in Shandelee.
Mr. Wehner is survived by his wife, Doris Wehner, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Lisa Wehner of Hartwick and Dr. Barry and Pat Wehner of Ingalls, Mich.; two brothers, and sisters-in-law, Howard and Myrtle Wehner of White Sulphur Springs and Allan and Myra Wehner of the state of Florida; five grandchildren, Jennifer Wehner, Christopher Wehner, Cody Wehner, Chase Wehner and Samantha Wehner; and several nieces and nephews.

Calvin L. Dymond

Calvin L. Dymond of Woodbourne, a clinical social worker and the proprietor of Calvin Dymond Assoc. in Neversink, died unexpectedly Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 53 years of age.
The son of the late Morehouse and Angela Quartarro Dymond, he was born July 7, 1948, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Dymond was a member of the Tri-Valley Lions Club, The National Association of Social Workers and of St. Peter's R.C. Church in Liberty. He was also a member of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Dymond, at home; two daughters, Mary Rose Dymond of Connecticut and Jean Ellen Dymond of Woodbourne; three sons, Calvin M. Dymond and his wife, Michelle of Storrs, Conn., and Daniel Dymond and Timothy Dymond, both of Fairfield, Conn.; a brother, John Dymond of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's R.C. Church, 264 North Main St., Liberty, with Msgr. Edward Straub officiating.

Robert Nelson Sr.
Ret. Gen. Contract., 85

Robert W. Nelson Sr. of Hawley, Pa., a retired general contractor in Barryville and a more than 50-year area resident, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Peter and Nannie Johnson Nelson, he was born June 13, 1916, in New York City. He was the widower of Ruth Elizabeth Kerr Nelson who died in March of 1980.
Mr. Nelson was a more than 50-year member of the Greeley Volunteer Fire Department, a more than 55-year member of Elks Lodge No. 645 in Port Jervis, a former Town of Highland Constable and a member of the Highland Lions Club. He was named Businessman of the Year for the Town of Highland in 1997.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of three years, Marilyn Nelson, at home; five children, Mary Ann Gasko of Lake Gaston, N.C., Helen Jane Brown of Norfolk, Va., Peter W. Nelson of Hawaii, Robert W. Nelson Jr. of Barryville and John E. Nelson of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; six stepchildren; a brother, Edward Nelson of Greeley, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Gavin.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Cramer officiating.
Cremation will be made at the HG Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, Pa., with private interment of the cremains.

Gertrude Ferrara
Ret. RN, 99

Gertrude Ferrara of Andover, N.J., a former Callicoon Center resident and a retired registered nurse, having worked at the old Callicoon Hospital and Community General Hospital in Monticello, died February 12, 2002, at the Andover Care Residence in Andover, N.J. She was 99 years of age.
The daughter of the late Angus and Mary Jane Brand Ritchie, she was born March 20, 1902. She was the widow of Dr. Anthony Ferrara.
Mrs. Ferrara was a member of St. George's Church in Jeffersonville.
She is survived by a son, Anthony Ferrara of Valley Stream; a daughter, Gertrude Schmidt of Vails Gate; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with Father Ignatius Smith, O.F.M., officiating.
Burial will be made in Holy Cross Cemetery in Callicoon.

Capt. John Lawson
Ret. CIA Spl. Agent, 98

Captain John J. Lawson of Hopewell Junction, a former resident of Fishkill and a retired New York State Policeman and special agent for the CIA, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at the Fishkill Health Related Center. He was 98 years of age.
The son of the late John and Mary Sopher Lawson, he was born April 30, 1903, in New York City.
He had also worked for Paul J. Mellon, retiring in 1978.
Captain Lawson was a member of the Association of Former New York Troopers, Tri-State Chapter, and a past president of the New York State Trooper PBA. He was a member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church, in Fishkill.
A U.S. Marine from 1922 until 1926, he joined the New York State Troopers in Orange County on May 1, 1929. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1937, Sergeant in June 1940, became 1st Sergeant in January of 1942 and was transferred in 1945 to the Ferndale Station. He was transferred to Albany in February 1955 with the rank of Staff Inspector and when he was promoted to Captain, became the troop commander in Hawthorne, and retired in March of 1963.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lawson of Hopewell Junction; a son and daughter-in-law, George W. and Linda Lawson of Hopewell Junction; a granddaughter, Brenda Yackeren and her husband, Donald, of Hopewell Junction; two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Caitlyn Yackeren; a great-grandson, Eric Yackeren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John Lawson Jr., who died January 1, 1972, a brother, Earl Lawson and a sister, Anna Bacallao.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, in Fishkill.
Burial will be made in the Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Marlene S. Dobell

Marlene Smith Dobell of Cochecton, a registered nurse at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 45 years of age.
The daughter of the late Franklyn J. and Marie Kiegler Smith, she was born January 20, 1957, in Bethel.
Mrs. Dobell was a member of the New York State Nurses Association.
She is survived by her husband, Timothy Dobell, a daughter, Heather Dobell, and a son, Adam Dobell, all at home; three brothers, Andrew P. Smith and his wife, Linda, of Cochecton, Franklyn R. Smith and his companion, Patricia Collins, of Rochester, and Matthew H. Smith and his wife, Dena, of Cochecton; two uncles, Charles Smith of Cochecton and Louis Kiegler of Honesdale, Pa.; an aunt, Vera Ordnung of Honesdale, Pa.; her father-in-law, John Jost of Livingston Manor; a sister-in-law, Allison Dobell of Livingston Manor; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dora Gorenberg Huss of Pottstown, Pa., a former resident of Monticello and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at the Pottstown Hospital in Pottstown, Pa., after a struggle with cancer. She was 80 years of age.
She was born in Poland on April 15, 1921, and grew up in the Bronx.
Mrs. Huss worked for many years with both union employee health benefits and publicity for the ILGWU (International Ladies' Garment Workers Union) in Manhattan. She also owned a bungalow colony, Doralee Estates, in Monticello. She had several columns published in the Sullivan County Democrat in which she advocated for the economic recovery of Sullivan County. Mrs. Huss was an early crusader on environmental issues which resulted in a landmark court ruling against water pollution by an oil company.
Mrs. Huss was a member of Congregation Mercy and Truth in Pottstown, Pa.
She is survived by her husband, Abraham Huss, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lesley and Robert Misko; and a grandson, Sean.
Services and burial were held in Pottstown, Pa.

Agnes I. Lavis
Ret. Bookkeeper, 76

Agnes Iselborn Lavis of Callicoon, a retired bookkeeper in Germany, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at her home. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Friedrich and Helene Iselborn, she was born February 16, 1925, in Germany. She was the widow of Arthur Lavis.
Mrs. Lavis was a member of Holy Cross R.C. Church in Callicoon and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
She is survived by three brothers, Karl Iselborn, Alois Iselborn and Paul Iselborn, all of Germany; an aunt, Marie Iselborn of New Jersey; a sister-in-law, Emma Iselborn; and two cousins, Danny and Elsa Iselborn of New Jersey.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross R.C. Church, Callicoon with Father Ignatius Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Section of the Callicoon Cemetery.

Olga Anton
Ret. Cashier, 79

Olga Anton of Livingston Manor, a retired cashier for the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, died Saturday, February 9, 2002, at the Walnut Mountain Care Center in Liberty. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Essac and Catherine Fotiades, she was born January 26, 1923, in Jersey City, N.J. She was the widow of James Anton.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Olga Fotiades of Livingston Manor; a sister, Ann, in Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, James Antonites, and a brother, Constantine Fotiades.
Services were held Tuesday at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Bayview Cemetery in Jersey City, N.J.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.
