Redistricting Begins

By Matt Youngfrau
MONTICELLO — February 19, 2002 – The process began last week to redraw the county’s district lines.
Sullivan County is divided into nine Legislative districts which were formed in 1995.
The Sullivan County Legislature’s General Services Committee took its first look at those lines during its meeting last Thursday.
Committee Chair Chris Cunningham introduced a resolution to award the contract of re-districting to GeoPolitical Strategies (GPS) of Hartsdale.
The group gave a presentation to the committee a few months ago on how they would do the job and were the only company who bid for the job. The resolution calls for the contract to be no more than $25,000.
Cunningham stated a committee would be formed to look at the districts.
There would be many groups that would come in to talk to them, Cunningham added, and they would get a great deal of public input. Many public hearings will have to be held on the matter.
It was estimated that the process should take between four and six months, however it needs to be completed before the next legislative election in November 2003.
