Services Set For
William "Bob" Werneke

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Church in Eldred for William J. "Bob" Werneke of Eldred who died March 8, 2001, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, with the Rev. John Ahern officiating.
Mr. Werneke was 85 and a retired physical education teacher and coach at the Eldred Central School.
Burial will be made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville.

Robert R. Owen
Ret. Garageman, 81

Robert R. Owen of White Sulphur Springs, a co-owner of the Deckertown Garage and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 81 years of age.
The widower of Irma Dolgas Owen, he was born May 13, 1920, in Grooville.
A highly decorated Army Air Force veteran of World War II, Mr. Owen served six years in the service and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany.
He formerly operated the Owl Garage in Livingston Manor for many years and most recently owned and operated Bob Owen Auto Sales in White Sulphur Springs.
He is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with the Rev. Gerald L. Wondra officiating.
Burial was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Louisita M. O'Brien
Homemaker, 93

Louisita M. O'Brien, a homemaker and 40-year resident of Sullivan County, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, after a long illness. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Peter and Mary Hughes Lange, she was born October 10, 1907, on Staten Island. She was the widow of John A. O'Brien who died in November 1965.
Mrs. O'Brien was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church and its Rosary Society, Court Mary Anthony #883, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County, all in Liberty.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Woods of Liberty and Jeanne Strizzi of Latham; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Liberty.
Burial will be made in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's R.C. Church, 264 North Main St., Liberty, N.Y. 12754.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Merton L. Sherwood
Wal-Mart Employee, 54

Merton L. Sherwood of South Fallsburg, an employee of Wal-Mart in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his home. He was 54 years of age.
The son of the late John C. and Arvilla O'Neill Sherwood, he was born April 7, 1947, in Parksville.
He is survived by his wife, Olga Dolgas Sherwood, at home; two daughters, Roseanne Sherwood of Delaware County and Bonnie Sherwood of Monticello; four brothers, W. Paul Sherwood of Cape Coral, Fla., John L. Sherwood of Roscoe, Donald J. Sherwood of Columbus, Ohio, and Arnold A. Sherwood of Roscoe; three sisters, Polly P. Phillips of Florida, N.Y., Ruth E. Sherwood of St. Augustine, Fla., and Sandy S. Kiakis of Roscoe; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. H.M. Fargo officiating.

Richard Phelps
Ret. Truck Driver, 71

Richard Phelps of Monticello, a retired truck driver, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Anthony and Margaret Bear Phelps, he was born in Greenwich, Conn., on January 1, 1930.
He is survived by a son, Andrew Phelps of the state of Florida; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Henrietta Phelps and Charles and Jeanette Phelps, all of Liberty. He was predeceased by four brothers, John, Curtis, William and Edward Phelps.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 South Main St., Liberty, on Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert C. Nadelen officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
