Bears Sweep Last Meet

By Frank Rizzo
GRAHAMSVILLE — May 23, 2000 -- The Western Sullivan League held the final rites for its track and field championship meet on Saturday at Tri-Valley CS in Grahamsville.
A steady rain and cold wind made for a miserable day for athletes, coaches, and spectators, and assured that no records or outstanding performances were in store.
“I did not have great expectations,” said T-V boys’ coach Joe Iatauro. “It’s difficult to ask a lot of the kids on a day like this. The motivation isn’t there.”
There were few surprises as well. The host Bears won the boys’ and girls’ titles in easy fashion, and it was the 15th straight crown for the Lady Bears, and third in a row for the boys.
The Lady Bears won all eight track events, three of the six field events, and two of the three relays competed to amass 262 points, more than matching the rest of the teams’ combined scores (see complete results, page 17A).
Double winners for T-V were April Nash (shot put and discus) and Tara Zanetti (100 and 400 hurdles), while Ashley Wall won the long jump and high jump for Sullivan West.
On the boys’ side double winners were Mark Vogel of Livingston Manor (100, 200 dashes); Zane Illing of T-V (400 hurdles, 3200); Joe Iatauro of T-V (800/1600); and Arthur Felder of T-V (triple jump, high jump).
Ed Dean of Eldred, the top seed in the high jump (6-1) and defending champ, chose to enter at 5-6 and failed all three attempts as he could not find the footing on the wet surface.
Brian Branning of Livingston Manor, ranked second in the discus in Section IX (school record 154-1), had to be content with a 134-9.
“I was slipping and sliding all over the (thrower’s) circle,” Branning said, noting that he had to switch from his Nike Zoom “Rotationals” to regular turf shoes.
The “Rotationals” help Branning with his spin.
“I got soaked. It was the worst weather I threw in all season,” Branning said.
T-V boys’ coach Joe Iatauro noted that the merger of Jeff-Youngsville and Delaware Valley spelled doom for the league.
“It’s time for this to come to an end. It suited its purpose,” Iatauro commented. “Now we’re on to our next experience.”
WSL teams will compete in the Orange County League next season.
To mark the occasion, several prominent athletes, as well as coaches and officials with a long association with WSL track and field, were invited:
• Norton Hyman of Sackett Lake coached the T-V girls’ team from 1972-79 and was instrumental in getting girls’ track started in the league.
• Gary Wootan of Callicoon coached Jeff-Youngsville in the ’70s (his daughter Madeline held the WSL discus record for many years).
• Frank Gibson was a longtime fixture at Livingston Manor, and former WSL track chairman.
• Terry Knickerbocker coached Jeff-Youngsville track and cross country teams for most of the ’80s and ’90s.
• Tim Benson, a 1999 Delaware Valley CS grad, the 1999 state champion in the discus and WSL discus record holder.
• Scott O’Keefe of Livingston Manor, WSL and Class C-D champ in the shot put and WSL high jump champ in 1980.
• Gary Lockhart was a league 100-200 champ at Tri-Valley in the late 1960s.
