Madelyn Winkler,
Homemaker, 85

Madelyn Winkler of Mileses, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at her home. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Dewey and Katherine McCormack Hogancamp, she was born December 10, 1914, in Port Jervis. She was the widow of Joseph Winkler.
Mrs. Winkler was a member of the Holy Cross Church, the Rosary Society of the church and the Catholic Daughters.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Rangaves of Mileses and Joyce Green of Honesdale, Pa.; a brother, Jack Hogancamp of Nineveh; three sisters, Marjorie Rury of Windsor, Joyce Bianco of Binghamton and Kathleen Signor of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Cross Church, Route 97, Callicoon, with Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Long Eddy.

Albert E. Thony
Farmer, 76

Albert E. Thony of Jeffersonville, a dairy farmer and lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late Arnold and Ruth Lawrence Thony, he was born June 19, 1923, in Jeffersonville
Mr. Thony was treasurer of the Sullivan County Creamery Co-op Association, a member and past trustee of the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church, a member of the Sullivan County Soil & Water Conservation District, a former member of the Farmer's Home Administration, and a 50-year member and past president of the Stony Brook Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife, Marion Hessenauer Thony, at home; a daughter, Karen Thony Brannick of Latham; two sons, Richard Thony and Albert D. Thony, both of Jeffersonville; three sisters, Hazel Hull of Tyler Hill, Pa., Helen Hughson of Jeffersonville and Elma Hansen of Liberty; four grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Thony, Michael Sylvester and Jeffrey Brannick; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Thony.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert McLeod officiating.
Burial will be made in the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Cemetery in Jeffersonville.

Helen Lloyd Jervis,
Homemaker, 93

Helen Lloyd Jervis of Bloomingburg, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her home. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Mercedes Andrews Lloyd, she was born August 12, 1906, in Bloomingburg. She was the widow of Samuel Bertrum Jervis, a retired U.S. Air Force Major.
Mrs. Jervis graduated from Middletown High School in 1924 and Cornell University in 1929. She was a founding member and past president of the Bloomingburgh Restoration Foundation, a cultural museum located on High Street in the Old Dutch Reformed Church.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Jervis Williams and three brothers, Joseph Lloyd, Clifford Lloyd and Edmund Lloyd.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bloomingburgh Restoration Foundation. Family and friends are invited to come and share experiences of how Helen touched their lives.

Francis L. Cromie, 85
Ret. from Nursing Home

Francis L. "Vern" Cromie of Roscoe, a retired employee of the Roscoe Community Nursing Home and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 85 years of age.
He was born October 26, 1914, in Roscoe.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Lake Cromie, at home; a brother, Russell Mootz of Roscoe; a daughter, Vicki Schwarz of Roscoe; six step-children, Robert Trask, Thomas Trask, Gary Trask, Mary Trask, John Pappas and George Pappas; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.

Frederick Davenport
Union Laborer, 71

Frederick W. Davenport of Walden, a laborer for Local 17 in Newburgh and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his home. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Anson and Mary Reeves Davenport, he was born April 13, 1928, in Roscoe.
Mr. Davenport was a member of the Wallkill Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Davis Davenport, at home; five sons, Fred H. Davenport and Wayne Davenport, both of Wallkill, Alan Davenport of Pine Bush, Chris Davenport of Montgomery and Richard Davenport of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Kathy Koontz of Walden and Renee Redner of Pine Bush; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday evening at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home in Walden.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Bertha E. Baker
Ret. Teacher, 97

Bertha E. Baker of Briscoe, a retired school teacher in the Jeffersonville-Youngsville School District and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. She was 97 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Anne Darling Miller, she was born April 21, 1902, in Briscoe. She was the widow of Olin Baker.
A graduate of Oneonta Normal School, she taught in many one-room schools in the area.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the choir, a Sunday School teacher and a substitute preacher. She was a former member of the Hurd Settlement Church in Bethel. A book of her poetry, entitled The View From Hurd Road, was published in 1994.
She is survived by a niece (step-daughter), Marilyn Nezelek and her husband, Chester, of Northport, Fla.; a grand-nephew, Robert Nezelek, and a grand-niece, Margaret Nezelek; and many dear friends and good neighbors.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert McLeod officiating.

Elsie Griemsmann
Ret. Chambermaid, 88

Elsie Griemsmann of Cochecton, a retired chambermaid at the Recreation Farm Society in Fosterdale, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Walnut Mountain Care Center in Liberty. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Martin and Bertha Brecht Braun, she was born April 19, 1911, in Philippsburg, Germany. She was the widow of Ernest Griemsmann.
She is survived by her dear friends, Wolfgang and Susan Blanke of Cochecton.
Private graveside services and burial were held at the Fosterdale Cemetery in Fosterdale.

Charlotte Woodruff
Ret. Office Clerk, 76

Charlotte Woodruff of Middletown, a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Albert and Catherine Adam VanBuren, she was born June 19, 1923, in Kingston.
Mrs. Woodruff was a retired office clerk for McMonigle and Rogers and had worked for Flah's, both in Middletown.
She is survived by her husband, William E. Woodruff, at home; two sisters-in-law, Marion Phillips and her husband, William, and Monica VanBuren, all of Middletown; her special adopted son, Jim Brown and his wife, Linda, and their son, Tim, all of Westfield, Ill; a niece, Nancy Babcock of Otisville; three nephews, David Phillips and his wife, LuAnn of Fair Oaks, Edward VanBuren Jr. of Yankee Lake and Stephen VanBuren and his wife, Donna, of Greenville; two grand-nieces and a grand-nephew.
A Service for Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. Friday at the Grace Episcopal Church in Middletown.
Burial will be made in the Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.
