T-HAT'S NO BLARNEY!: Joe Plocharzkyk of DJ's Woodworking in Yulan shows off his Irish hat during St. Patrick's Day festivities in Yulan Sunday. The gnome we inserted next to him was also present at the parade (though we readily admit he's not real!).

St. Patrick's Day

By Sue Monteleone
YULAN — March 14, 2000 -- Despite cold temperatures, the Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Yulan was a huge success. Roughly 2,000 people attended the parade event.
Crowds lined the streets of the small hamlet of Yulan to watch a variety of fire trucks and personnel, colorful floats and musical bands strut their stuff in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
Grand marshalls for this year’s event were Linda Borstelmann and Michael Donnelly.
Winners of the parade judging were:
• Best Appearing Marching Fire Department - First Place - Neversink Fire Department, and Second Place was given to the Wurtsboro Fire Department.
• Best Appearing Fire Apparatus was given to Kauneonga Lake, who received first place, and second place went to the Lumberland Fire Department.
• The final category of Best Overall Appearance was given to the Smallwood Fire Department of Mongaup Valley.
See this Friday’s paper for more coverage of the parade!
